(car audio fanatics)subs in an fc?
Have any of you attempted (and accomplished) putting subs in an fc? How did it turn out. It seems like it'd be kind of rough to do. IF ya did, give me some tips and pointers and such. I hate rap music, I hate rattling trunks, I just love music, and I love it loud. Thanks
Logan PS: I'm looking for QUALITY sound, not just "mad phat beats yo." |
i thought about it, but the thought of a random sub just rolling around back there and in plain site, i dunno. im thinking about getting an infinity basslink. i have seen people put subs in the storage bins. good idea, but i like putting stuff in there.
|
i've got a single 10" MTX in my car. The amp is mounted in the pass. storage bin. Ask more specific questions please. I'm an installer so i'd love to help ya.
Edit: about to put in two Audiobahn 10's and a JBL amp all with fiberglass. |
I'd go with a custom ported box....i use audiobahn flame q's and let me tell you that they beat hard....im running 500 watts each...they have a 900 RMS and they are 10s. The box is ported and has a volume of 1.5 cu/ft. Just make a custom box out of MDF ...u can use 1/2" thickness since its ported...(releasing its pressure)...but id make ur own box....make a weekend project and measure twice and cut once
Edit: i hit 139.9 dB in a contest....with 200 watts to each sub...now that i have a stronger amp and a +15dB gain ...i can reach probably about 145 |
box with 2 10" Focals fit just fine in my trunk.. takes away a little over half of the usable space though.. you still got the bins and on top of them too
|
would 2 12's fit ok? Im looking to put the two amps in the bin (one for the subs one for speakers). Also, what would I have to get to power these? When do I need to start looking at another battery? Also, what do you mean by ported? What is probably the best bang-for-buck amp? Thanks for all the help.
Logan |
First of all...i think 12s will fit...just custom making a box...u could get 2 15s in there if u want....u need atleast a 4 gauge amp kit if ur running more than 800 watts...and if u are worried about getting another battery....get a capacitor first...then see if its still underpowreing it and then get the 2nd battery..
Edit...theres 3 types of boxes...sealed, ported, bandpass. Sealed= named is obvisous....,.totally sealed...the vibrations make the hitting sound Ported = has a 3" diameter pvc or some type of hole that is like 6" deep in the box to pick up the bass ....its louder but u need more cu/ft Bandpass - ported box in the back and the front of the subs are sealed w/ plexi glass to show off the stuff.... best amp for the buckk....i got a 2000 watt amp max for 149 its a lanzar...hey atleast its a name brand |

I did a sub install, and once I get the money, its coming out, but to be replaced by another sub install which I should have taken the time to plan out before. From what I hear putting subs in the bins isn't a good idea, but i've heard it has decent results from a few who have attempted it. If you want it to look clean, do the bin install, remove the spare tire (if you dont mind it not being in the car), or get two 10"s or 8"s. I have one 12" in the back, and it forced me to remove my hatch cover, because of the height of the enclosure even tipped on its back. If I could change the setup, I would do a dual 10" enclosure, so I could keep the hatch cover, and hide the setup so nobody goes to steal it, and it has a much cleaner look to it. If I don't do that, then i'll go for a bin install. The only rattle point on my car has been the back windshield where it comes in contact with the car when its closed. Just shoving some dynamat or something in that space should fix the problem (not even sure if its just my car or what), but you need to put more force on the hatch cover to slam it shut so it clicks into place with the extra padding in there. Oh and the back liscence plate, but just shove some padding behind it and its not a problem, I just used some paper towels, shoved them back there, and they haven't even gotten wet or anything, and work fine.
|
you cant get good bass from the bins because the subs must be facing the rear of the car (about 1 or so feet from the back) for you to hear the bass. The best place to aim them is toward the corners of the hatch area. I often thought about the bins. But SQ would suck if you did that. I have pic of a false floor install in an FC if anyone wants to see them
|
Depending on the brand of Sub you choose I guess you could do 2 12" but since you are aiming for quality sound and not "mad phat beats yo." you will want to stick with a sealed box, which require more space. I would do 2 10" it's plenty of bass imo.
I had two amps in my FC a Mcintosh MC427 (100x2) and a Mcintosh MC431M (100x4) both together drew around 100 amps or so full power, which I never really found the need to do. I used the stock alternator and it never gave me problems. I am pretty sure I was pimping it badly though. |
The bins would be all right for small subs....like 8s...or if u have crappy 10s that cant have a lot of power....high end subs like to have room to breathe and make u shake! also for more ear piercing volume towards the subs towards teh hatch...so it rolls off the glass and comes foward
|

This is true. and i was talking about a ported box when i said they like to breathe....sorry if that confused ya..i shoulda specified. i like sealed to just becuz u dont get port noise but when i hit 139.9 i was using ported...i havent yet to see a sealed box hit hard...of course i havent seen them in comp either
EDIT: plus in a sealed box u can make it "loaded" or stuff it with polyfill...which tricks the sub to make it think it has twice the much space ...just a little trick |
i dont think 2 12's would fit very well, it would take up most of your hatch, even with a custom box.. youd almost have to go sealed (smaller), because you WANT them to be facing the rear or else youre going to lose some thump. 2 10's fit ok, it will POUND.. even in a sealed box they pound because of how close it is. 1 200watt 10" sub is louder in my rx7 than 2 10"s in my old lancer and the 1 12" 500watt sub i have in my accord, just because the hatchback. great cars for subs :)
|
2 10's would be perfect. I've got one 10 only 200RMS and it pounds!!! Soon to be two 10's tho
|

So what does a sealed box look like? Any pics or anything. How much am I looking at paying for a decent setup with 2 10's and an amp? Ya.
Logan |
You can look at mine CLICK HERE or just do a Sounddomain.com search. I have poor quality pics tho. For a decent system you'll be spending up to $1000 or more. Or you can go Ebay.

Edit: sorry double post |
I made a box that was about 8 inches high and it wrapped 1/2 way around the rear strut tower. I just had one 10 in it offset to the side, it was pretty loud. I don't think yo need alot of sub, like a 15 for example, because it's only in a little hatch area, your not putting in a trunk or anything. if I can come up with a picture I will post it.
|
Holy jesus, 1000? How do you figure? Best buy has a special, 2 kenwood 12's and a 2x1200 (I think) watt amp for 378.
Logan |
i've just installed an 8 inch jbl in the rear centre. its only 350w but is ideal as it means i can turn all of the bass off on the other speakers which makes them much clearer. the sub is mounted in its own enclosure and is fairly heavy so didn't move much when i first put it in. i've since put lots of sticky back velcro on the bottom of it and doen't move a bit. eventualy, when funds permit i'm gonna put two 8 inch subs in the bins.

Logan what brand of amp is that? those deals are not usually the highest quality stuff, thats why they're so cheap... in my ford escape (SUV) i spent like 10,000 on audio stuff, not just the subs/speakers/deck/amps/power cap, but also in custom fabricated sub box with decron padding, custom metal brackets for the box, custom dash kit, sound dampening in the doors/hatch, etc.... if you want something good you'll need to spend some moeny, the 378 dollar one wont be that great and may not last that long. im not saying spend 10 g's like me, mine is way more than most anyone needs... you can check out my escapes system on the link in my sig for it on cardomain, right now its the #1 ranked escape on cardomain hehe :D |

Logan $100+ x 2 for subs $200 $150 x 2 for D class amps (JBL) $300 $20 for wiring kit $20 $100 x 2 for boxes $200 Grand Total $860 (and thats the cheap stuff) |
I made a custom box to fit in my spare tire enclosure on my old 86 fc, it held a single 10" atomic sub and it sounded great. extremely clean reproduction. Not just boomy bass, you could actually hear the strings on the bass guitars, and kick drums sounded live. Plus, it was stealth, so nobody had a reason to break into my car.
|
Why one amp per sub? And whered you get 100 per box? You know a lot more then I do, so I'll listen to you, it just didn't add up for me. What are caps? Ya. How much would it cost to put em in the bins? Would that ever even be able to sound decent at all? Thanks again.
Logan |
btw, I did the bins install and it didn't sound good. the same speakers in the same boxes sounded 10 times better in the rear of the hatch. duh.
|
You can wire two subs to one Dclass amp... its a little more complicated tho. Boxes are expensive unless you get them from walmart. Caps = capacitors. They help store up energy so your lights dont dim when the bass hits. The bins would NEVER sound good unless you made them bandpass. But bandpass sucks cuz its made to filter out distortion and it doenst play very many frequencies (sp)
|
$80 X 2 for 2 subs off ebay (very good subs.. lots of em on ebay)
$250 X 1 for decent amp on ebay (got mine for cheeap from best buy.. punch 360a2.. never have i had a problem with it and it pouuunds for the price) $20 X 1 for install kit $30 X 1 make own box out of MDF :) grant total of: $460 for a system that will bump very hard in your rx7.. no competition system by any means.. but as loud as you want im sure. |
I don't know! It's all so complicated. lol, choices choices choices. I want it to sound good ,but I also want it discreet (I don't want my baby broken in to.) So ya. What's the best way to do this?
Logan |
I have about $300 invested in mine but I got a heckuva deal.
SPL III 1600watt 2chl amp Twin Hollywood Excursion 12" DVCs Fusion sealed box It's just kinda shoved to the back and pinned between the rear speaker towers. Much slammage, even with subs pointed towards the front of the car. |
Whats a good speaker (not sub) amp? is it possible to get one for under 200? And do I HAVE to get a 4 channel amp?
Logan |
a good sub? JL Audio makes wonderful subs.. Kick Comps are very good subs also .. especially for the price on ebay. if you mean normal speakers.. oo MB Quarts.. mmm, expensive but well worth it :)
|
You can get whatever kind of amp you want... depends on how much you wanna spend. Alpine and Audiobahn make awesome amps for any application, but they are very expensive. You can, however, get one of their lower-end amps for less than 200........ and no you don't have to get a 4-channel amp... you can get a mono-block, a 2-, 3-, 4-, or even 5-channel amp. Yes they do make them all, and it is crazy.
|
Do you have AIM or yahoo or MSN messanger its easier to talk on there?
|
but would a, say 1200 watt 2 channel amp, power my car speakers well? They are like kenwood 120 amps I believe. My speakers at higher volumes really start to distort (I would think they could get louder) and my bro said it's cuz Im just using my head unit, and it's trying to push so much volume with little power. Ya. Is that the case?
Logan my aim is WishingAnne Lead, but Im leaving in a few, so add me and you can talk to me tomorrow. Thanks for ALL the help. |
Uhm, check your wattage ratings on your speakers before you amp them. Have you tried fooling with the stock amps any?
|
i had 2 12 jls back their in a custom box. no rattle just quality clear crisp and precise sound heard from at least 2 miles away. now for Sale if anyone is interested. I need the money.

here is my setup and it sounds good contrary to popular disaprovment. |
Pick out the gear that you want, wait for it to show on ebay. You can pick up new in box brand name stuff for about 50% off of what you would pay locally. You can cut more if you are willing to buy used (but you never know what you'll get). If you are willing to wait, and know what you want, you can put a kick ass system together for 10 cents on the dollar- but you dont get warranties.
|
I have to put my pics, on here... check it out. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=220663

Wont sounds good unless its facing the rear. I'm tellin ya...

Thanks Logan PS: I'm looking for QUALITY sound, not just "mad phat beats yo." Most places that sell SAS Bazookas will let you try\test them before you buy them. Give them a try, you will be surprised. Forget about enclosures, you are not a audiophile (which is a damn hard task when working on a rotary car), you are not a SPL freak. Just make sure you don't try\buy the self amplified bazookas. Also, do not buy the 10 inch SAS Bazookas, they don't have that "tight" bass that you are looking for. |

here's a pic of my box:
couldn't find the right carpet colour though...It's a custom box, still have access to my spare tire, tons of cargo space still, and my back windshield is tinted to 5% so no one's gonna be able to see it. Not that it's that noticeable with the grill anyways, from up top it looks like part of the car, aside from the carpet colour |
