Man, I just failed Arizona emissions like a CHAMP! Loaded reading for HC was 412 (220 allowed) and 1101 (WTF?!?!) at idle (220 allowed). And the CO was 6.42 loaded (1.20 alowed) and 2.07 idle (1.20 allowed). How in the HELL did I fail so badly? Man...Aint this a BITCH!?!?! Could I have missed anything when I got the new motor running? Mixture? When the car is running, and it runs great, all you can smell is gas!

If you'll run her @ 80MPH for 30 min then keep her revved in the emissions station (4500 rpms) - it should pass better.
Keep that cat nice 'n' hot.
If you haven't had the 60K service done in a long time (plugs, wires, timing), - that will do it too.

Change your plugs/wires/fuel filter air filer.
Strip down the entire intake system and check for leaks
Change your O2 sensor. Do you have cats????
Check everything. Check operation of the air pump
You rally shouldnt have failed that badly if you have cats and a working air pump.
Are you burning anything?
My car passed as the cleanest car in my family.

Not to rub it in, but I just passed emissions. CO was 0.03(1.20 allowed) and HC was 16(220 allowed). This with an exaust system with a catalytic converter that gets used this one time a year(Mazdatrix dual the other 364 days of the year). I suggesst if your 02 sensor is good, and you replaced your plugs and air filter prior to the test like any sensible person would, then you catalytic converter would be high on my list of suspects. Very high. You do not say if your acv or air pump are working or not. You should check out the operation of the acv and air pump. There is a fsm at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/Technical_I...ice_manual.htm and P.S. mine is a 87 also.

HA HA HA...Rub it in Hailers....
Anyways, here is what I DO know.. The air pump is hooked up. The ACV valve is nothing I even know about. Unfortunately, no I did not change the spark plugs NOR did I put a new air filter in (stop laughing at me!!!). And my engine was extremely flooded before I finally got it started so I am guessing that there is TONS of gas in my oil. Cats are hooked up (at least till I can pass this DAMN TEST!!). So my guess is its back to square one. I was also reading about an air/fuel mixture setting so I am gonna have a look at that too. I am just baffled at the amount that I passed by...I didnt even get into the ballpark.

THat was back in 00 when my car had stock everything, 77K miles and bad plugs. Now i have 153K miles, no cats and RB mufflers, interesting to see what i can get at the test next month. I am ordering a Random Technology or Bonez cat nmext month

If you want to see some grade-a funny ****, I can scan the emissions test from my Explorer. It needed a new cat. Its on a line chart, and there are times where it tops out the chart, just a straight line across the top.

When the cat went out, did it make everything fail? Both CO and HCs? Plus there is still the fact that you can SMELL gas when I run the thing..Its definately running rich, or something like that.
I have to admit I cringe and worry every time I have to do the emissions check. My sticker ran out in September and I just got around to taking it to the Firestone store this morning. I got stopped by a cop about three weeks ago a block from the house. Not ticket, but it did motivate me. It seems a lot of your problem might very well come from the flooding. Once thats cleared up a change of oil just before going to be inspected should help a bit. Plugs should help a good deal along with the air filter. You might adjust that variable resistor during the setting of the idle mixture. The factory manual is at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/Technical_I...ice_manual.htm and just look in the Fuel Section for the non-turbo. In that same section there is a section for checking out the Switching solenoid, Relief solenoid, acv etc. Hope for your sake it does not come down to replacing the cat. I had to do that on the 82rx I have. So I put the new one on once a year and take it right back off and store in a sealed container. Too expensive a part to be left on a car where it'll subjected to heat, water etc.
I'd try the new plugs, air filter, setting the idle mixture, checking the functioning of the acv prior to buying a new catalytic converter. Only after failing real bad again would I throw money towards a cat.

Yeah..
Thats what I was thinking...I am not real excited about buying a new cat, just to take it back off. I am gonna look up all the links you gave me, and basically go throuh the car totally. I am just bummed cause I want to drive it!! BAD!!

J-Rat... I'll get you to pass. Drop me a line at pjhradil@u.arizona.edu or PM me.
We're going to need to tune your car up. I'll go with you when you get the stuff, but you'll need the following to be sure next time:
1. Fuel Filter
2. Spark Plugs
3. Wires if old ones are bad (Autolite has lifetime warranty)
4. O2 sensor (BITCH to get out the old one-- I broke a ratchet.)
5. Air filter (Cheaper in the long run to buy a cone and a breather at checkers-- Grant and Park)
We're going to have to check your pulsation damper if you smell fuel.
I can check your ignition timing- this should fix your idle reading.
I have new cats from catco. If ABSOLUTELY necessary, we can talk about me lending them to you for a couple of hours some day (planned in advance 'cause the Rex is my only drivable ride-- and I drive A LOT). Maybe you can help me out in return when I need it...
There's a couple of other things I need to do to get you to pass.

I went and got most of that stuff today at BAPs on 22nd. I got the plugs, air filter, oil, plug wires, and oil filter. I can get whatever else is needed. If you need to loan me the cats, I can definately hook you up in return. I will email you my Cel so we can talk about it..

If you smell gas, I have to believe you have a gas LEAK somewhere. It is hard to believe you would significantly smell gas if you were only running rich. 1st check is the dreaded Pulsation Damper.
Anyway, I had to run my '88 Vert through a Socialist Republic of California test only station. I leaned it out to the point it would only barely hold an idle, dumped two bottles of fuel injector cleaner in a gas tank 1/4 full, and made sure the cat was nice and hot before I put it on the machine.
I totally blew away the test.
One other good tip is to change your oil and run full synthetic before you take the test again.

Gas smell
Wouldn't affect emissions results, but I wouldn't thing a gas smell would indicate anything specific to a cause of a failed emission.
Separate issue, but needing diagnosis and correction SOON. Take it from one that has already dealt with an engine fire. Not good, expecially if you just replaced the engine (as I had prior to the fire).
