Question Can I Drive my car w/o the Air Pump Belt

Hey guys

My Air Pump is shot and my car is in a parking lot at work. I want to get it home @ 8 miles. Right now the belt just slips on the Air Pump pulley smokes and screaches. Can I just cut the belt off and limp home, how will the car drive? Will it hurt anything?

I do not have any cats...just a complete RB Exhaust.

I called Mazda up for a pump and you would not believe how much they wanted for one. Anyone know of a place that sells these things?

Thanks for any help...

Billy

Sure, since your not running a cat youll be fine. Even then it would take moer then 8 miles to damage the cat.
the only thing that wont happen is that your 5th and 6th port actuators wont open. But you can still drive the car.

oh.. do u have emissions tests where you live? how are u getting by with out a cat? If you dont have the test, you could remove the acv and airpump all together. but you would have to find some other way to open the 5th and 6th ports. probably cheaper then a new airpump.

Yep, you can just cut the belt and will be good to go.

It should be VERY easy to get a used air pump - hell, I've personally thrown around 10 air pumps in the trash at my house! The only difference is NA and turbo - just find someone with a good NA airpump for sale, and you're good to go.

As stated above, if you have no cats, the air pump only serves to open the 6ports and VDI. You can drive the car forever with no air pump and no cat and have no problems. It's not a good long term idea to run the cat with no air pump, but it will be fine short term.

do remember that with the air pump off (or air pump belt off) the water pump to alt belt may slip...so driving it home shouldn't be a problem, but i addressing that issue before thinking of pulling the air pump off or keeping the belt off permenantly.

Cool, I took a box cutter to the belt and the car runs smooth. Thanks for the help.

Now addressing the long term, I do not have to worry about emmission testing in my state. So what are my options? If I remove the air pump and block off it off how do I actuate my 5th and 6th? Or should I bite the bullet and spend the cash for the new pump.

The water pump pulley will slip whether you know it or not.&nbsp Others will argue you can just tighten the alternators, but this puts too much strain on the alternator bearings.&nbsp The "proper" way to take care of this is to run a pair of alternator belts with a double-sheave pulley.&nbsp Racing Beat makes this for under $100.

Ok so lets say I decide to Remove the air pump all together and I get that double sheeve Alt Pulley form RB. What about my 5th and 6th ports. Do you all recommend wiring them open, or is there another option?

By the way how do I get the pulley off of the alternator andy advice on this?

Will i need a block off plate for where the airpump use to be?

Thanks

in regards to banzai's pulley, i haven't had any problems with it and it's working pretty good so far (2 weeks)...and because i have emissions in my state, it's better to have the dual pulley than not since in about a year i have to put the air pump back in and hook up the belt...

Nice link. I tried to post the instructions yesterday, but my link went down.

Anyway, try the cheap lawnmower belt mod. Those are available through your local "Home Depot Racing Developement Shop."
