89-90 GTUs 5th gear: .697
Actually, the above chart isn't entirely correct. The 89-90 GTUS does have a different 5th gear set -- its ratio is 0.756. I switched to this gear set when I rebuilt my transmission a few years ago. The p/n's for the GTUS gear set are: M508-17-308A and M514-17-611A. The p/n's for the GXL 5th gear set are: M507-17-308 and M512-17-611.

Top of third with 390 gearing. Even if you had 430, I don't see how 100mph=4th@8k

And top of fourth is a bit past 130 on a 390

I know that miatas have a quite short 5th gear ratios (don't ask me what years or gear ratios etc). Some people have changed the 5th gear to an RX-7 5th gear succesfully. I beleive it's a drop in mod, so we should be able to use miata 5th gear ratios. I think the 1.6L miata's would have the shortest 5th and IIRC they do ~4000RPM at 80mph in 5th gear with a 4.3 rear end. It also bugs me that there is no power in 5th gear. But if you have a shorter 5th, then your fuel milage will drop. Remember, it takes gas to make power, so if you have more power you'll use more gas. Check out miata.net for miata info.

GTUs has lower geared rear end
Shifting into 5th at 8k RPMS? must be a racer
If the speedo says 100 @ 8K in 4th then it's not just your 5th gear.
