Caliper Question--s4/s5

Will S5(89)GTU calipers(which i believe are 4 piston), be able to be swapped onto my 87 TurboII with ease? Because i know for sure i need new calipers in the front and i can get a hold of the s5's.

thanks

Just get the rebuild kit from mazdatrix. It's only like $25.

i think it depends
if you have single piston fronts in the 1st place cause of the main brake booster the thing behind the pedal on the firewall in the engine bay will have to be replaced...

i believe it was an option for the 4 piston calipers in the front for the 89 GTU. i believe the base version had single pistion brakes. if this is the case ill have to look for a set of 4 piston calipers(probably rebuilt--besides mazdatrix, where can i find these?)

but if my friends gtu has 4 piston front, it should be a easy switch, since mine are.

89 base version = GTU.

as for where to get them, i got used ones and rebuilt them/cleaned them/slapped some engine/caliper high temp paint on them.

They should be fine-4 piston GXL S5 to 4 piston TII S4.
If you can do the job, rebuiling is the best way to go. About $25/30 total for both fronts. Rears I'd buy rebuilt, or used.

ok, so i know for sure that the GXL(not GTU ) calipers will fit.

for those who have done the s4 to s5 caliper swap or visa versa, how tough of a job is this? any potential problems i should look out for?

as far as draining the entire system? examining the bearings? hoses? etc?

i just ordered OE brembo rotors and axxis pads for the front..looking forward to doing this swap and upgrade.

how difficult are they to rebuild? any special tools needed? i have a set of 4pot front calipers..but im weary as to whether or not they're easily rebuildable. it says in the FSM not to separate the two sides..and it looks kind of close spaced to get the pistons out/in correctly?

hmm....pop out the pistons with compressed air...as long as theyre not siezed in some way. put new O-ring seals in each piston hole thing. put new dust boot/jacket around top of piston and ring to hold it on. oh and take the time to thoroughly clean all the parts and be sure not to score the piston walls. pretty easy job, hardest part is getting out the pistons and if you've got a compressor its not hard at all.

you do NOT have to seperate the two haves of the caliper. the pistons can clear each other with no problem.

Talking

Be sure to keep those fingers out of the way when popping the pucks out with compressed air. They can come out with some force. Don't ask me how I know this.
