this is all covered in the FAQ for FC sticky thread found at the top of the 2nd gen technical section

Please read the FAQ for FC sticky thread before posting. It contains the answers to many commonly asked questions such as the one this thread was started with.

Well no they are not that bad. It is my opinion that they are easier than piston cars to maintian but a nightmare if they are not.

There are a few websites out there that have a good list of things to look for when buying an FC.

I can't think of the website though (argh) ok here it is it is a good list to go with

http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/buy1.htm

Basically what I was looking for in my RX-7 was that it not to have any mods installed. Also I wanted a car with good upkeep from the owner. Depending on the mileage of the car there are a few things that must be done to keep the car in great condition. People seem to look at the body for some reason as if thats what is going to get them around. Imo, the body is the 2nd thing to look for, rust, dents etc, but most importantly is the engine, what is under the hood. When I was shopping for my Rx7 I actually saw an 88 with a Corvette engine in it.. I asked the guy why??? no matter, make sure you test drive the car, rev it up to red line, make sure the beep comes on, make sure the oil pressure is at spec.. >3k rpm the oil pressure better be above 60 psi. typically the leather seats will be ripped, worn or torn, but a good shop can repair that.. Use the condition of the engine for negotiating on the price. not just the condition of the body.

Definetly ask what kind of oil was being used on it, and when was the last time they changed, the fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, O2 sensor, gaskets, and how much oil consumption is used on the car. (about a quart per 1k miles)

If you get a good project car, ask around at salvage yards if they have any rx7s on their lots, spare parts are often found there =)
