Buying another S4 questions.

well this is going to be my second s4 and i still have the other one as a project, but i was looking for a daily driver and i believe i found one, he is 3 hours away and i tried asking all the questions i can before going over there this weekend.

i asked about rust, he said there was none on the frame or underneath ( hopefully )

he also said it stutters a bit , and that it may need new spark plugs and wires, also maybe a new cat but i dont need emissions on a 1987.

so my question is, what could the stuttering be ? hopefully its nothing major because the car is in decent shape with no rust.

Until you look at it and maybe do a compression check you don't know what you have. If it's rust free and runs, go for it.

ehhhhhhhh I'm thinking not really, but it's hard to know what he means by 'stutters'. if it's a real bitch to start, gutless, and sounds real weird it could be blown or have stuck side seals (which will act similarly to a blown engine and could possibly need a rebuild to correct).

I second the thought on grounds, and add checking for vacuum leaks. Anyone who isn't meticulous with these cars will MOST LIKELY have at least small vacuum leaks. I even had a leak coming through one of the solenoid bodies, so I siliconed that bitch up.

It's tough giving advice if you should buy or not. Look at the body condition, does it smoke after start up, does it have a bunch of leaking fluids in the driveway. Does under the hood look like a hack job with a bunch of jerry rigging? Is the interior bad..etc. etc.

but hey, don't judge a book by its cover, he said he would throw in the wires but i would need to have the new plugs with me the day of test driving it, also he said it would make it on the road back safely. so ... lets see how it goes ..

Edit: i was just bringing the plugs to see if it fixes the problem or if i can figure it out there and then

I used this as a guide for my first time rotary purchase. I was lucky and found a great one. Check my sig. No problems after 5000kms except for 2 wheel bearings and drivers side spindle that sheared

spindle sheared?! jesus christ... must have hit a curb crazy hard or something in past years?

if the rear seats are in decent condition you can usually get $200+ out of them, they're somewhat uncommon.

and check the underside carefully. I drove 3 hours once to check out a shell that was damn near immaculate, until I looked under the car. it was ******* falling apart from the gut, and judging by the way the guy talked even if I had asked about rust before driving up there he would have said "yeah man! completely rust free!"
