Buying an 88 GXL, need help!!

Monday morning, I'm purchasing an 88 GXL. I went and drove it yesterday, and it seems pretty sound. No leaks, clean engine. Needs a little TLC though, but seems like a perfect project car. Got the guy down from $1500.00 to $500.00. He bought the car for his 17 year old son almost a year ago, and within 3 days of purchase, the guys son lost his license, so he was pretty desperate to get rid of it. Anyway here's the question: When I took it out and drove it, it started up right away, with no smoke, and it idled like a dream. I took it out on the highway and let it warm up. I has good power untill about 4000 rpm's, after that it seems to fall flat, Kinda like the A/C is on or something. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen. The engine does't knock or anything. Any help on this subject will be greatly appreciated.
BTW- the engine has 141,5xx miles on it.
And I searched around and found the problem with the 3800 rpm hesitation, but it doesnt hesitate. it just doesnt seem to make any more power after 4 grand

5th and 6th ports seem to be not opperating. try to pull on them and see if they move(with the engine cold) if not you need to pull your manifold off and cleam them up if not just remove them. they are right above the exsaust manifold on the pass side of the motor.

That is easily determined with a compression check. You should always check the compression unless you automatically assume that the engine will need a $2,000 rebuild.

OTOH, you're getting a car that runs for $500. I figure it could use a little refreshing

slow87turbo probably hit the nail. My GXL's don't operate correctly either, probably due to my past non-redline days... Notice *past* Anyway, Good Luck.. sounds like a deal
