Compression test, oil leaking through the seals, if you can't do a compression test, look in the exhaust ports and see if the apex seals and rotor faces look in god condition. Without a compression test you can't know.

Nice ploy to get people to look.

AWWWWW that was so wrong.

Yeah, spin the thing over by hand and make sure it has compression. Pull the plugs out and spin it by hand and make sure all cycles are strong. Pull the exhaust mani off and look inside. Look for rust, carbon, scored rotor housings, and make sure ALL the apex seals look good and are intact. Look at the engine oil, is there copper color flakes? Is it burnt? Does it smell really heavy of fuel? Look at the coolent fluid (if its not completely drained), is there comtaminants? Is there rust in it? Thats all I can think of now, I'm sure there will be more suggestions from others.
