Exclamation To Buy or not to Buy...Please give advice

I was thinking of buying a "1988 GX RX7 FC" , any ways it has around 170 xxx Km
and has a muffler leak.

Other than that ext. and interior look clean and fine

It is not emmisions tested or safety tested, (should owner do this testing before I buy or not?)

What is this cars worth? Thank you.

its hard to say when we dont have pics to give you an educated guess on.

a "typical" car with that description is worth about $1,500-$3,000 or more depending on alot of other factors that cant be forseen

Thanks... yeah it is up for $2000
But dunno if i should offer lower because of muffler and testing which needs to be done... generally do you guys ask the seller to test it before you buy it???

Oh and I also forgot to ask, generally, how long can a rotary engine on that FC last till, I mean considering it has 170 xxx, how much longer you guys think it has?

The exhaust leak will not allow it to pass safety inspection. I highly doubt that it will pass emmissions if it has not been maintained.

Rotary engines are like piston engines, some last a long time, others don't.
170,000 kM is about 110,000 miles, that is very reasonable. mine has 195,xxx on it and has 115 psi (800 kPa) compression front and rear. There are several guys going around here that have well over 200,000 miles (320,000 km) on their original engines.

Ask him what to do if it floods, if he knows exactly what to do, you are probably in trouble.

Ask him fuel what mileage he got out of it, if he says below 17 mpg (7km/l) or greater than 14 l/100km than you have a problem.

You can have compression tested if you are very worried, or plug a vacuum gauge in while it is idling (should be greater than 17 inHg (50kPa))

Other things to make sure it has:
Smooth idle
No hesitation
Good low-end power (no significant increase in power at 2000 rpm)
Working wipers (all speeds and intermittent)
working sunroof
working headlights
the tires arent wearing strangely (one side of the lugs are worn down)
Normal brakes
No rust on the drivers floorpan, teh rocker pannels, or the rear fenderwells

Others may chip in with other thing to look for, but if it has all the above, it is worth $1000-$1200. If it passes safety ans emmissions inspection, then it is worth $2000. (All these numbers are only my opinion, obviously.)

I hope this helps you to be a more informed buyer.

I guess I'll ask him to get it all tested or at least try to work out that kinda deal.

Anyone know how much muffler repair costs?
