Question buy or not

I am currently trying to buy a 1987 mazda Rx7 turbo ll. It has 107,000 miles on it, and the body needs a little work. The onwer told me it does not start or run, he is selling it for $700. Should I risk buying it or not, what things should I look for or hear in the engine to see if it could be fix. I notice that is missing the belt that is the right front side , the opposite side from the turbo. Please can anyone help me

For $700, that'd be a steal. You could buy a brand new T2 motor and drop that sucker in there.

uhhhhh... its not that simple...

I would check the compression in it, and if its no good, offer him about 500 like said in the above post...

Hell offer him $500 anyways even if it is good, if he takes it good, if not, oh well its worth a shot. I would probably buy the car...

Depending on what the body looks like.

Question 5140

The body is pretty good, it has only minor dents in the front, it also needs a paint job but that is it. Is taking the engine out and putting another one in, hard to do. How much would a better engine cost.

The 13BT (stock engine) is a perfectly fine engine and is good up to around 400 HP. 13BT you can probably find for probably 1k. If your goals are much higher, though, you might consider dropping in a 13B-REW (from a 3rd gen.), a 13B-RE (from a Cosmo) or a 20B-REW (from a Cosmo). And by drop in I mean spend a lot of money, like more than 10k, to custom fit it into your car.

I don't know...for the amount of cash you'll end up spending I would wait until you find a good deal on an '89+, big difference. Unless you just want an all out project car, then it's a good deal.

Thanks you guys for the great advice. I got the rx7 for $250 but, had too pulled it home. Im trying start it up, so far it needs a starter and alternator, I hope I can get it to start to see how good the engine is.

nice find

I got my 87 for $400.
77k on the clock. It had an engine fire.. So after about 2 weeks of consuming all of my spare time, it runs!

you need to do some searching....

fuel pump is prolly crap if its been sitting, mine was.
pull the plugs and put a little oil in the plug holes... just a squirt or two in each will do. let it sit in the for like 24 hours. it should get you a little better comp and make start up a little easier. get ready for smoke tho.
have another set up plugs on hand.. they will foul.

man there is a list of stuff you need to do before you try to crank it, LOTS more if it has been sitting. Do it right and ya never know that motor might be ok.

let us know if its been sitting and ill link to some threads on what you need to do before start up.
