Angry Burning, strange smell, doesnt start, rattles and what not

I had trouble starting my car this morning. its an 87 turbo II. It felt like the battery was dead but then all of a sudden it started up with no problems. Well i drove it about half way home(15 miles) and it started making this weird noise. It sounded like something was rattling inside. Kinda like when ur valves are really loose on a piston engine. Next it started to smell like ****. I cant really explain the smell. It was like a mix of burning clutch, burning rubber and powersteering fluid I guess. It was awful. Anyways once i got home I let it sit for about 5 min hoping it would do the good old, i was broke but fixed myself thing. No luck. It started up fine this time but thought i'd drive to my garage just incase. Well i shut it off there, tryed to bump her over..Nothing..then a sputter.. then nothing..Could it be the starter? The batteries new. I dont think the engine blew. Also the ebrake light was on since this started too. No matter what i tried it wouldnt shut off. Please help me guys. I dont know what to do nor think.

Question

You DID release the handbrake, right ?

Anyway, rattling ? You sure nothing is loose in there ? Did you do a thorough check of your engine bay ? That every hose, wire and line are where they are supposed to be ?

I've been looking over and over it for the last hour and everything seems to be in place. As for the noise though, it seems to be towards that back of the engine, down towards the tranny. Well thats where it was before it decided not to start anymore. I just wish i knew what caused this rattling. It sounds like it would if u stuck change in the wash machine..well, u get the idea.

Question

Back of the engine ? Rattling ? It sounds like a transmission problem (maybe a gear lost its teeth ), but you say the engine doesnt start ?
Have you checked all mounts, maybe something broke ?? And if you dont hear a "click" when trying to start the engine, then surely the starter is the place to...errmm...start

Yeah theres no click at all. I'll throw in a spare starter and see what happens. Thanks for your help and opinions.
