Broken tension bolt
I race my '87 Sport and recently noticed a coolant leak coming from where the tranny mates to the engine. I pulled the tranny and noticed that I had broken a tension bolt.
I removed the flywheel so I could remove the busted bolt. The bolt broke at the treads where it enters the front housing.
My question is, can I simply plug the hole as a stop gap until I have time to pull the engine and drill out the offending bolt? I know that you lose one tension bolt when you do a peripheral port engine, but that bolt is not in the high stress portion of the power stroke as the bolt that broke on me. My busted bolt is in the combustion section of the power stroke.
It took me a while to diagnose this problem and I probably ran a couple of events with this condition, so it does not seem like it's hurting the engine. However, I'm interested to know if I am risking potential damage if I run the engine for a few more events like it is.
Thanks,

Yesterday must have been my lucky day as I was able to drill out the broken tension bolt with the engine in the car.
It took a little ingenuity and fabrication of tools, but it worked! Now all have to do is replace the broken bolt and button everything up.
Take care,
