without resorting to beef, i did just find this,, taken from an mx5 forum, and it appears to match reasonably close to the small spread of numbers i just made
,, allowing for some error margin between my infrared themo and that OP's test rig

appears he was chasing a similar problem to me
trying to range the needle correctly.. ( in his case a linear sweep )
though on a 99 miata , and his solution was fairly radical !

if i take this as representative of the sender and dash issue i am having
then it is suggesting that i need to look for approx 20 ohm resister so as not to bluff things too much
i expect that emulates as about 5/8 on the gauge at 90C , and 120 ish at the top
