brakes having issues... don't want to die

just wondering whats up

it seems when I push in the brakes they do ok for normal braking but anytime I have to apply more then norma braking pressure it doesn't really stop any fast it just starts getting a manual brake feel... you know STIFF

it's kinda like you know the thing about diminishing returns

almost like that normal braking fine
but much above standard braking it doesn't add to the braking effort much

also notice that my e-brake doesn't seem to be grabbi nas well though I might be mistaken on that

and it isn't like this is a slow occurance it started happeneing all of a sudden more or less after getting some snow on the ground and all the moist and stuff just figured picked up some oils off the ground but then it kept going on so I donno and we haven't had any snow or wet since really

im a little confused about your post ,.. the best thing i can suggest is to try and bleed your brakes. might have gotten some moisture in them if you lose pedal after hard braking. or you might have semi faded or glazed brakes. i would start with taking off the tires and checking the pads and rotors, and looking for any leaking brake fluid. look on the rotor for heat marks as maybe the braked over heated and glazed up. and look to see how much life you have left on the pad. if your really low that might be your problem. if everything looks ok, try bleeding the brakes with some nice new brake fluid and try that .. after that i would look at a master or a booster. although a stiff pedal normally occurs with a booster problem

don't think it is an issue with air in the line or being low on fluid. if that was the case it would prolly start going to the floor when I pushed on the brakes

and it's not an issue like brake fade where when the brakes get warm they don' want to work again if that was the case woudln't the pedal start to go floor again correct?

under normal braking the pedal feels fine more or less.
but if I push a little harder then just normal braking I don't really get an increase in braking force just gets harder to push the pedal with a mild increase in braking force. doesn't matter if the brakes are cold or have been run hard or anything either it's always like that.

also I think the e-brake isn't even grabbing as much though I might be wrong there since I don't use it very often so lets not put much faith in that statement

just to check if it is an issue with glazed bads or shiney smooth rotors could I just take some sand paper to rough things up a little to hopefully bring a little life back?

I would look towards the brake booster as the problem, do some checks on it as the fsm says

oh boy that's a nice download
sorry I'm on dial up :-(
though might be able to snag it at work.... gotta love the at least t3 line comming here

but one thing I did notice is when I shut the car off I get about 1- 1 1/2 pumps before the vacuum leaves the booster

Yea after you shut the car off you should have 1 or 2 pumps before the booster loses its vacuum, possibly more depending on the fsm, does the pedal feel normal when the car is off and you try to put it to the floor? I would definitely change the brake fluid as part of trying to find the cause, because its just good to have clean brake fluid, if you haven't done that already
