Question Brake problems

Okay having some brake troubles in the 87 T2. I searched but didn't really find anything related.

It just started doing this. I'm driving down the road and I want to come to a stop and most of the time my brakes work great, but every once in a while the pedal will go almost all the way to the floor before I can even get some pressure behind the pedal. It will slow my car but then if I release and press again on the pedal it will be back to normal and the car will stop easily.

Is this a bad master cylinder which would mean that i'm getting "blow by" in the cylinder? or maybe a bad power brake unit (the big round black thing behind the master cylinder)?

thanks

Dave

Intermittant blow by is a fair description.

Your master cylinder is probably bad, but first check the fluid level.

If the booster were bad the pedal would feel hard & it would not sink to the floor.
Be very careful.
Dont drive unless you have to, until it's fixed.

Okay well I already checked the fluid lvl and it's at max. can't really tell how dark the fluid is though cause of the floaty thing at the top.

I believe the problem is getting more and more frequent but it's still intermittant. The pressure is regular most of the time, (it's working properly) and then the pedal goes all the way down so i guess it's not the power unit itself. Since I can lift up and press again and it returns to normal I'm thinking it's the master cylinder. hopefully I can just replace the master cylinder and that'll be it. thanks.
