it can't be a hard test, the last time i did one, i didn't need to bring the car.

While there may be soem unique needs for resurecting a salvave title, this appears to be a real crock fromthe state of CA. After having reviewed the web site cited, the check seem to make common sense. However, this is never done for an active registration / car check for reregistration. While a good idea, no one ever checks brake and lamp operation for reregistrtation. Not even during the great smog inspection process. Just another way to make money that likely does not make a difference in the safety of vehicles on the road.

I did it to revive a salvaged car. I believe that's the only time it's required. There is no form online or anywhere available telling you what they actually inspect. I never got a itemized list after the inspect either.
Basically, they check that the brakes work and all the exterior bulbs light up when they're supposed to.
Including the side markers. Cost about $100. For the price, it's a ripoff, but there isn't really any way around it since it's required by the DMV.

This is weird... it just sounds like a normal inspection. They are supposed to make sure the pedal isn't mush and the lights work.
In NY, you register the car and they give you a 10 day temp inspection to get the car checked. Sounds like it's backwards in Cali?!
It seems to me after all these years, it's best to not own a car in Cali. And by that I also mean never live there.

That is part of the safety inspection in Texas. They do this with or without the probe in your tailpipe.
This year is the first year I am safety only and they just check your lights, seat belts and wipers.
It's $12.50 LOL.

You only have to do the test in California if your car is a salvage title to reinstate it into the road and its a one time deal but its the smog check that you have to do bi annually but California does have the highest EPA standards and States
