Brake help
Hey I am kinda new to working on your own vehicle and I thought I would try and start to learn by changing my rear brake pads myself. The problem is I couldn't get the brake piston to retract far enough to put the new pads in. I am just wondering what I am doing wrong. I do have a haynes manual but being new to this sorta thing I still cannot get the piston to retract.
Thanks in advance for any help!

There's a funny looking tool used to rotate the rear brake pistons in, but a pair of needle nose pliers work just fine. Don't try to compress them with a clamp or anything; it won't work. Just rotate the pistons, insert pad, bolt up and you're done. Just don't forget to bleed the brake system.

Pliers will work if the caliper is in good shape. If it's a bit stiff, then you need a special tool. Probably available for rent at your local auto parts store.
Some aftermarket pad sets have very thick shims that may no allow the caliper to fit over them. In that case I often remove the outer shim.
