brake disc rust

i made the mistake of placing my new in the box brake discs on the garage floor over the winter... and now they have a nice coat of rust on them... i assume that they will be ok to still use... but should i get them re-machined? or should they just be fine to use...

If it were me, I would get the rust machined off. My car sat for a while and the rotors got rusted, and when I started driving if barely stopped and ended up glazing the rotors, so now it stops like ****. I'm gonna have to pull them now to machine them, so I would jsut do it while they are out. Its cheap, anyway.

I think it depends on what you mean by "a nice coat of rust".
I'd hit 'em with a Scotchbrite pad and see how clean you can get them, if there is no pitting then I'd run them as is with your old pads for a few days and then put new pads in.

i had no old pads... the old pads were pretty much attached to the old calipers.

Pep Boys will do them for $10 a brake rotor and get all of them done in an hour in my area. Might want to hit them up. Napa as well.

Well, that sort of cuts down the options, don't it?
In a perfect world I'd throw in a set of cheap pads till the disks were nice and clean then install your Hawks (or whatever) but most likely, just installing the new pads will be fine.

Where are you in Wisconsin...I was born in Menomonee.

id just get out the elbow grease and attack them w/ the scotch brite and some rust penitrant. Although if there is pitting it might be a good idea to have them machined like others have said.
