Unhappy Blown Engine

I blew the engine in my '87 NA. No compression in rear rotor. I have it out and have someone who has rebuilt one to help me. Should I rebuild this one? I can't afford a rebuilt right now. Is it even possible to find used ones in junk yards? What's this gonna cost me? Also, where should I order parts if I do decide to rebuild it myself? Give me your ideas and suggestions. Thanks.

If you have the time, rebuild it yourself, its a great way to learn how things work on your car.

As far as rebuilding the motor, you will have to pop it open and take a look to see if it is rebuildable. Mazdatrix has some great info on what they wont re-build, and I think Dave at FC3S.org has a nice photo doc of a rebuild.

If you need the car running ASAP, get a motor from a junk yard, and start rebuilding the one you already have so that you have a spare.

If you need a motor quick you can also source an engine at a Japanese Engine Importer. Most blocks I've seen ranged from $500 - 900, though these were turbos. But it came with everything on the block... Waterpump, alternator, turbo, manifolds etc etc...

Regards,

they import complete engines, engine/computer, or engine/trans combos. not bad prices either.

what about these japanese motors?

has anyone tried to install a j-spec motor? if so, is it hard to do and are they reliable?
my engine blew in mid august and i had a dealership put in a whole new block. needless to say, i got ripped off and there are still problems with idling and the coolent system.
lesson learned- mazda dealers suck!
