Block off Plates

For people who made their own plates what type of material did you use?

I see alot of places selling it use stainless steel but believe it or not...there is none around my parts in that gauge. So wondered if I could use something else without bad effects.

3mm (1/8") aluminium is ideal. It's much easier to cut and shape than stainless steel, which IMO looks out of place bolted to a cast aluminium manifold anyway.

Oh ok, so is there a reason for the 3mm size? or just something that seemed good and has just been the standard?

lol, well from my options here I can make some out of a thinner metal that is still got some strength. Just wasn't sure why it was always 3mm. As long as it isnt as weak and think as foil I would figure you it would be fine.

lol, yeah I guess I will see how my cut job comes out as well.

3mm should be considered a minimium thinkness of any material used. Any thinner and it will bend too easily. The plate must be perfectly flat to avoid vac leaks. You don't need a 1/4" thick plate, that's just pointless overkill, and steel just doubles the amount of work required to make it.

3mm aluminium will give you a great result with the least amount of work. That's my advice, but feel free to use whatever you want.

CAUSE **** WARPS EASILY WHEN IT'S THIN?

You ever tried to use a warped block-off plate?
It's not fun.
Especially when you KNOW you have an intake vacuum leak, and you're kicking yourself in the *** trying to find it.
Then you find out that your block-off plate was warped... :P
