How to make it more reliable? There's no secret answer, like you said ensure maintanance stuff is in order and ensure that everything is working 100%. A lot of the time bigger problems are caused by half assed fixes or minor problems that are let be.
One thing I will mention is that I've seen a LOT of FCs missing their undertray which is crutial to cooling, also the fan shroud.

I would see what hasn't been done, Synthetic gear fluid? Rear diff fluid? Changed the coolant? Brake fluid?
And what has been mentioned, the fuel filter, many people forget...
How is the suspension? bushings? Anti sway bars?
All done? Detail the interior and engine bay....
Finished there...Undercoat her....

don't forget things like the battery or alternator--many FC owners will tell you that the alternator is a weak link. ESPECIALLY if you have a car with all the power accessories.
On mine, I just got a grounding kit. Newer battery cables. Brake pads. Belts and hoses. New clutch(waiting to go in). New tires. All within the last year and I am sure I am forgetting some things. Just got a CUP HOLDER that goes in the dash under the stereo, but dont think I can get away with calling it a reliability mod.
Just treat it like any other car when it comes to regular maintenance, because for the most part, it is about the same I find. There are two points however that you should check before you check much else--spark plugs and your o2 sensor. Both will give you better running and mileage, both are inexpensive and easy to do, and both are often overlooked. I pay about $20 for a set of plugs and I paid $35 for my o2 sensor this past year at Autozone. I am also thinking about going to premix, because that way I KNOW my engine is getting the oil it needs. If my 18 year old OMP goes to ****, it will happen while I am driving, and that would be bad.
And depending on how many miles you have on yours, you might want to start thinking about a compression test. I know the cost of a rebuild can get up there, but I would rather do one when I schedule it than to do one because the car just died and I have no choice. Plus, I am looking to supercharge mine, so I want it as healthy as I can get it so if I see my numbers starting to get down there, I will just pull it out and get a rebuild done before I lose the engine.
