Coilovers replace the strut and spring assambly.

I just started drifting 6 months ago. It is the most fun you can have in a car period
My car is really well setup for it and all I have is a 88 TII with 3"exhaust, Tein Drift spec coilovers and a custom shimed diff that i did my self. I have done the full race car strip down on the interior and added a rollcage, which is not nessary but I would strongly recomend it for safty. get your self a nice seat and harness as well. It is hard to drift if you are in the passanger seat or pressed up against the door panel.
Shoot me a pm if you have any specific questions about any thing.

Keichi "Drift King" Tsuchiya In '84 Tsuchiya wins the Fuji Freshman racing series 6 races in a row. His tail slide corning style earned him the "Drift King" name. The once notorious touge street racer who had his racing license suspended at one time eventually expands his career internationally and wins the GT-2 class in '85 at Le Mans 24 hrs. Since 2000 Tsuchiya has competed in the JGTC 500 series with the ARTA NSX. He is one of the founders and also a judge for the D-1 Grand Prix drifting competition.

to compete: coilovers, adjustable pillow mounts, stiffened sway bars, stiffened chassis, upgraded LSD, poly bushings, and tons of hours dialing it all in and perfecting your style. that would be my recommendations though. every drifter will tell you something similar, but different.
everyones style is different because of their cars/mods/setups/racing background, so you cant really expect tons of tips except helping you out except in these beginning stages.

yea i'd just get shocks/springs for a daily driver. mind you, you don't need anything to drift, just go out and use your stock car. when you can control that, you start upgrading. then you can feel how each improvement changed the charachteristics of the car. the people here are more than happy to tell you what parts to get, but a well maintained stock car is very capable of drifting for a noob.
but yea, watch the drift bible and read as much as you can, then go out and practice what you learned.

Yeah, what he said. Springs and shocks are the best start. If you feel the chassis is too sloppy then strut bars (not to be confused with sway bars) are a good start to stiffening it up. Very effective and relatively cheap. But like he said one mod changes the entire feel of the car so its important to get used to the way things work together/handle/react after every mod. Especially suspension mods on a double duty daily drifter.
