Battery Question

Hey guys, question for you. My 86 has been in the garage for the past 3 weeks while my father and I work on the body. On the weekend, I went to fire it up to move it around to work on the other side, and I got nothing. It didn't even try to turn over. No lights, wipers, dead. Dad had the charger on for 5 minutes, and it read the battery was fully charged, and it started. Now, it says that its fully charged, but it doesn't do anything. My security light won't even blink. Do you guys think the battery just might be dead? Its from October of 2003.

Thanks
Rick

Sounds like a dead cell to me. Take a known good battery and try it and see if it still happens.

Yeah, I tried to yank the one out of my Jeep the other day, but that didn't happen. The positive terminal is rusted right on to the damned cable.

Tap it with a hammer enough and it will come off

Still could be a good battery- 3 weeks is an awful long time for a car to be sitting with the batt connected...

Give it a good charge, or jumper the car and take her for at least a 20 minute drive. Once you jumper it, leave the hood open and grab a meter and check the voltage at the batt terminals, just to verify that the alt is working as it should (should get about 14 vdc).

After you run her for a while, shut her off and check the batt again with the meter- should have a bit over 12v. If so, your batt is probably good...

Just don't let her sit for so long next time

Well duh! If it's just been charged and won't hold a charge then it's a bad cell.
