Most of the time when you see white smoke coming out of the tail pipe its most likey the coolant seals have failed...
try revvin the car at 3500rpm for a good 15-30secs...
If alot of white smoke comes out then its probably the coolant seals...
If blue/ black smoke comes out of the tail pipe then you are burning too much oil (check oil levels), which means something is wrong with the turbo most likely the turbo gasket/seal...
Some other signs can be that you see smoking coming from the TURBO itself, useally between the turbine and compressor where the and coolent/oil lines are. Also if you see oil around the turbo itself.
To check for shaft play just take out the TID and see if the compressor blade wiggles around, by hold on to the center shaft and moving it. There should be little to no play..
To check the turbo seals you need to take the turbo apart.
hmmm.. i see you are from the San Jose area what part do you recide in?... maybe we can meet up sometime...
