bad idle when warmed up

Hi everyone. I have search and read, but I haven't found a post exactly related to my problem so I figured I would ask. Here goes.

I have an 88 TII. When the car first starts, it idles perfectly around 750. After about 10 minutes (either driving or sitting) it will start idling a bit rough anywhere from 500 to 750. This is about when the temp gauge reads it's normal temp (a little less than 1/4). This continues as long as the car is on. Driving during this time also leads to my lights blinking sometimes as I pull to a stop (car almost dying), but it has never actually died.

It may also be important to know that the car does flood if I just shut the car off. I figured out that reving it to 2k or so immediately before shutting it off seems to make the car start up right away the next time I get in.

If anyone has had this problem and can provide some insight, I would appreciate it!

Thanks!!!

Oh - to clarify... I don't really care about the flooding issue. I only mentioned it because I thought it may be related to the bad idle issue.

Thanks!

try cheapest fixes first.

FREE: check TPS settings, readjust idle if things were out of spec. Check timing and adjust CAS accordingly if out of spec.

1: run some injector cleaner through your car, the injectors may not be closing fully. (you may want to look into getting them ultrasonically cleaned soon anyway)

2: get a 3" rubber plumbing capand pipe clamp from lowes or Home Depot and punch a small hole in it for you to put an air chuck in (air sprayer hooked to a compressor tank). heat the engine to operating temp, quickly remove your air filter from the AFM and clamp the plug on the AFM and seal the air chuck to the plug and pressurize you intake system to about 30psi should do. you will hear any vacuum leaks hissing.

i say heat you engine first because you are only experiencing bad idle at running temp, some vacuum leaks only show up once the tube is warm/softer.

hope that helps you out a bit,
Ryosuke

Thanks for the info. I will do what you suggest and see where that takes me.

So I checked the TPS today... It was right at 1K ohms... But as I opened up the throttle it started shooting up (as I believe it should). By half way to WOT it was reading over 8K and anything past that point seems to hover around 8K. Do you think I need a new TPS?

Thanks!
