Bad apex seal?

Hello, I just got a 90 TII and it doesnt run right. The guy i got it from said the engine needs overhauled. Im going to go over the symptoms and see what you guys think...

when you crank it over it doesnt turn over evenly. Like, fast,slow,fast,slow... Kinda like its dead on compression on one rotor.

When it starts up it runs like total crap for a minute, then runs somewhat smooth at higher rpms. But it doesnt rev up very fast.

at an idle (only likes to stay idle when its warm) it sounds like its "missing" really badly like its only running on one rotor.

Does this mean a bad apex seal? Is there ANY other parts that would cause this problem? Im VERY new to the rotary world, so any help is appreciated!

Those symptoms are all indicative of a blown rotor... the apex seal may not be "Broken", it could be stuck...

pull the EGI fuse on the drivers strut tower

take the top plug out of the front rotor.. turn it over (car won't start with the egi fuse out).. you'll probably hear pweesh pweesh pweesh

put the front one back in and take out the rear top plug.. it'll probably be black and nasty lookin... turn the car over... 95% chance that you'll hear one pweesh followed by two flurps this tells you that one apex seal has failed... or a string of "weak puffs", or nothing at all which tells you that more than one apex seal has taken a crap and ther eis not compression on the rotor at all..

Yep, bad apex seal. Also, if its stuck, how do you get it un-stuck?

Yeah, is there any way to "unstick" an apex seal? I would like to be 100% sure that this motor needs torn down before I go pulling it out of the car. Thanks

usually the only way is to pump in some ATF into the bad rotor housing and crank the engine for 1 revolution and let it sit a while, rinse and repeat a few times then crank and fire up the engine with the plugs in and spray some carburetor cleaner into a vacuum port while revving the engine at a constant 3-4k RPMS. may or may not work but its better than nothing.. also depends if it is "rust locked" or "carbon locked", it really depends on how the engine was stored, could be both.

some people say there is no such thing as carbon lock, i've really only seen rotor faces slightly damaged pinching the seal in which case there is no way to free up the seal other than to rebuild.

hello i was wondering if that is what would be wrong with my 86? when i drive it sometimes it will run like a champ and then out of nowhere boom sounds like its missing and if i stop giving it gas it will die? if i keep driving it it will sometimes kick out and run normal but if not i have a sputtering problem til i get home?when it is sputtering and rev it, it is very hesitant and will rev up to 4k and it will lack power? i did a comp test on it and it was low so i need to know if its only a seal getting stuck where it stops giving compression or what? any help will be good thank you
