AWD on an FC
AWD on an FC
Hey guys,
I'm new to the list and I'll keep my introduction short -- engineering student in Milwaukee, bought an '88 TII in mid-summer. It's already stored for winter.
My question: Is it possible to install an AWD on an FC?
There are two reasons I ask: 1) I'm a rally freak, and may consider modifications to convert the FC to a rally car. 2) I want a much safer car for driving during winter.
I admire the FC and wouldn't mind spending some serious cash to make this upgrade so any info would be well appreciated.
Thanx guys, looking forward to being part of this community.

The engine sits low and behind the steering rack, so I think it would be very difficult, bordering on impossible, to make an FC AWD.
Anything is possible, with enough money, but I really don't see how it could be pulled off.

back in 87 or 88 they had a 4wd rally FC but it only lasted one year after the driver left for a different team
i believe only 1 or 2 were made and it would be pretty hard making a FC to AWD
good luck though

Hmmmmm... Nothing's impossible. The major obstacles would be the engine being mounted behind the wheels, so maybe if you move it forward a foot or so, that would give you room to put in a tranny from some american made 4x4. You'd need some sort of adapter. Then you'd have to redesign the front suspension.
Actually, if I remember, I heard and/or saw a story of a rally fc with awd down in OZ. It sounds like a great idea but a royal PITA. Good luck

I think that Steve Millen did it a while back. He used some 626 parts and alot of creativity to get it to work.

Rod Millen. Millen was frustrated with the Audi Quattro's obvious advantages, so he wanted to do something about it. Millen usually had about the same stage times as the Quattro, but the Quattro almost always beat him to the corner from a dead stop, so if he could get more traction, he figured he could make up that time. He adapted the front suspension and drivetrain from the 626 to the tube frame chasis RX-7. The conversion raised the car 3/4 of an inch and added 100 lbs. He did this little project in 1983 with an FB.
