Automatic Transmission Rebuild Problem

Of course I can swap to a 5 speed if I wanted, but I have 4 other cars with 5 speeds. :-p

I rebuild the transmission with new clutches and steels, 2nd gear brake band, and a full gasket and o-ring set. In D, 2, and 1, it feels like it is stuck in second gear. Reverse feels sluggish just like second gear except in the reverse direction.

What might I check? The second brake band did not have any sort of adjustments like the overdrive band did.

check your valve body, sounds like you're missing a check ball or 2 or possibly your bands are set too tight.

never pulled apart a 7 auto before, best of luck finding anyone else who has bothered... i'm pretty sure you are on your own, a sports car with as crappy of an auto as these have is a giggle and even i won't support the learning process to fix them and point people to the nearest tranny shop.

i've worked on just about every aspect of the 7's but i still refuse to touch that god awful thing.

These transmissions were used in 80s nissan maximas and some of the old datsun models. Those guys seem to love it for some reason. I seen some that even said they used these transmission behind their turbo powered boingers. I do agree that they are a pita and terrible for any sort of power, but this car is not for power.

Sucks to have to loose $25 in fluid to pull the pan each time.

you can filter the fluid if it's really important to save money. a paper paint filter is less than a buck.

Old modulator was bad. Leaking fluid into the line. Replaced with new at time of rebuild. Plans are now to pull pan and valve body and inspect all check ***** and passages as well as double check band adjustments.
