Auto to Manual Swap--Tips/Help/Info

Hey guys,

My 89 GXL is about to undergo the transmission conversion. I've read all the posts i can find about it and have read Kevin's info sheet. Is there anything those of you who have done the swap can add?

Are there any safety concerns?

Has anyone ever used FB GSL or GSL-SE gears in an 89-91 FC transmission for lower gearing?

Do you guys have the clutch/starter interlock working?

ANYTHING else you can tell me is really appreciated!!!

Flyby116 and rx 7 driver can you guys add anything???

Thanks in advance

Seems like I read you'll need to add a support somewhere in the transmission tunnel.

Anyone confirm this?

You'll need a custom tranny mount.

You need a manual starter.

My car will start without the clutch.

Speed control requires some rewiring.

New drive shaft.

New flywheel with autos counter weight.

Pedal cluster.

Shifter and associated equipment.

Master and slave cylinder with clutch line.

Clutch

A few electrical issues.

don't forget to unplug the auto puter (pass. side kick pannel)
the pedals suck *** to install (found it easier when i removed the seat to get under there better)
the tranny mount is easy to make (despite what people say)(u will need the auto brace)
fly wheel nut is 54mm i belive (corect me if i am wrong)just get the socet and a big *** air gun and its easy

will u be useing a lift?? if so undo everything in the engine bay first (i didn't and had to climb up there on a ladder and unhook the auto dip stick and was not happy being the tranny was held up by the jack alone) u have to cap the intake where the vac line went to the auto tranny......
the only thing i think Samps left out is pressure plate

i'm not saying anything about taking/leaving the counter weight....... some say keep it others say take it off....... i took mine off and no problems with almost 5k on it since the swap

the swap isn't as hard as everyone thinks i was nerous about the swap (esp. since it's my daily driver) just take your time and ask Q's when u r a little confused, and u won't regret it , i would recomend this to any auto 7, the change in power and acel. are great and very noticable. my votage even went up a notch

well thats all i can think of for now good luck.......

Thanks guys. I'm having the conversion done at a local shop, butwanted to know everything about the swap. Hopefully, everything will go well. I'm keeping the 3.91 open diff for now, but l using FB gearing for lower gears 1-3. I'm also using the stock flywheel.
