Anyone Using 2 Stock Intercoolers welded together?

Hey all, I was thinking that this would be a pretty good/cheap idea for my turbo project. I would be setting it up like BlueTII as an H-Mount, but with the core runnig the other direction.

There was a guy at SS6 who had a red 'vert he had converted to turbo. He had two stock ICs welded together and set as an FMIC. He said it was a fair amount of work, but it worked just fine.

BamBam7 did that on his turbo-NA car. I don't know if he made any formal measurements of performance though. Seems like it would be reasonably efficient, since the stock TII intercoolers definitly don't suck.

Running intercoolers in series (inline) doubles the pressure drop of the intercoolers, which means that the turbo must work harder (and therefore create more heat) to produce the same amount of boost in the manifold. Running the intercoolers parallel lessens the pressure drop, but requires more plumbing.

I suggest using a larger intercooler instead because that way you don't need to worry about welding and leaks. You can get a used NPR intercooler for $100-300.

There is a guy on ebay who custom builds intercoolers for $200-$300 and they are a damn sight more efficient than the stock intercooler... I would go that route.

As I stated before, I will be running a H-mount set up like BlueTII.

He is running an NPR intercooler, and I wanted the stock one coz I could set it up with less pressure loss. After reading Maximum Boost, and Turbochargers, I found that if the air could take a shorter trip the the core it would have less pressure drop, but would have the same thermal efficincy as one of the same size.
I did a really crappy job of explaining that, but hopefully everyone understands.
Evil anymore thoughts on this?

My thoughts are that I seriously doubt that two stock IC's rigged together will have less pressure drop and/or higher efficiency than the NPR intercooler. However, I don't see anything wrong with trying it out to see how it works. Both of those books will tell you how to test the pressure drop and efficiency. Also, be sure to re-read the Maximum Boost book reference series intercoolers and long intercoolers vs. tall intercoolers like the NPR. Your "shorter trip" theory will help throttle response, but may or may not help pressure drop because pressure drop is more dependant upon the bends than it is on the length of the tubing. The H-setup in the picture looks good because it appears to have only about 100-110degress worth of bends. The sharp bend off the turbo isn't so great, but I don't see any way to fix it. In my experience, a "perfect" intercooler design would never fit in the car, lol.

mine too . a friend of mine had 3 stock ic's welded together on his fd (triple stage) and it worked great, by the time the air gets to stage 3 its cold. i dunno about pressure drop though we never checked
