Any interest in a tray for lighter battery?

Turbojeff I believe it is, makes 51r battery trays for the 3rd gen guys. I didn't want to spend that much money and wait for a groupbuy, so I went ahead and made my own tray for my FD. So I was thinking, maybe you 2nd gen guys might like something like that for FC's? (I used to be a poor FC guy so I know how it feels, but now I'm an even poorer FD guy and I can't justify spending that much on something I could make myself) The 51r is *much* lighter than the stock battery and also nearly half the size. I got one at Costco for $35 w/ a good warranty too. I'm not sure of the quality, but heck for the price and a full replacement warranty, why not? I know some of the FMIC kits for FC's require relocation, but maybe with the smaller 51r the hassle of a full battery relocation would not be necessary... If anybody would be interested in something like this let me know...

Thanks,
Aaron

The one problem with running a smaller battery is that you lose CCA and Ah capacities.
I run a Costco battery (Group 24), and it only costed me $40.
It's a 2-year no-hassle return, and I think it has a 600CCA capacity.

With these crappy Zenki alternators, I kill mine regularly due to the Racing Beat dual sheave pulley due to the underdrive.

I would shudder to think of using a smaller battery with less capacity.

Well they should work and have been working fine using FD alternators. I just wanted to give people the option if they wanted to go a different route.

Impreza2rx7, do you have any measurements on the battery?

A bigger alternator doesn't increase CCA of the battery.
What is the typically CCA of a 51R battery?
I doubt it's like 500CCA unless it's really expensive.

So then what's the explanation of them working fine in FD's? I know there are quite a few people using these batteries w/o problems...

I don't know the typical CCA of the 51R off hand, but I will try to find it...

Well a Dynabatt would work fine with an FD alternator, with an FC alternator it would be a no go, I doubt the capability of the alternator would keep it charged. CCAs arent an issue, I have a Genesis 13lb battery in my Impreza, and its been in there for 2 yrs, and my car has started everyday, in the coldest of winter in NJ and Colorado..

There's also quite a few I've seen complain about slow cranking issues.
"Trickle chargers" were mentioned frequently.

Hey, just remember to do an FD alternator swap at the same time.

As for price, it shouldn't be too much, depending on my materials cost. I think the FD ones by Turbojeff are going for $70+. I was thinking more on the lines of $40...

I would've had one in the mail by now if a deer hadn't decided I needed a new headlight, hood, and fender.
