Any help for a new Rx-7 Lover?

Greetings Peoples...

I am in the market for a '91 Convertible. I would also like to find out what repair manuals might be best thought of among rotary enthusiasts.

I plan on rebuilding a new engine, in part to become familiar with the rotary as I plan to do an aircraft conversion as well.

Any particular weaknesses of the 91 or the vert compared to other 2nd gen?

Is there such a thing as a 92?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

The Mazda RX-7 Factory Service Manual (FSM) is the best thing to get. Carry it with you like a bible, and it will rarely fail you. Also, the Haynes repair manual is good too.

The 91 is considered the Series 5 (S5), which ranged from 1989-1991 in the United States. The weaknesses of S5's is that it appears Mazda had skimped out on a few peices in an effort to save money. All-around though, the S5 is highly superior to the S4.

Is there such a thing as a 92?

In Japan, yes. The Convertible was continued into the 1992 year, being sold alongside the 3rd gen (FD). There was never a 1992 in the United States.

Thanks in advance.

Your welcome!

Welcome!

In my personal experience I've found that 90% of my problems have been non-rotary related issues. Mostly electrical gremlins and other problems caused by aging components and parts. My advice is to be prepared for things like this...cuz with older cars...when sh*t falls it tends to hit the fan on the way down

Welcome to the club!

The vert is the slowest FC just so you know.
They also dont sport a LSD which is pretty nice.

I have both the FSM in pdf on my computer, and the haynes manual for my s4s and have found them both equally valuable. You can download the FSM for free.

I've never worked on a s5 before but I like that my s4 NA has a LSD, and the computer isnt as finicky i hear. I think my s4s are very well built, and the gxl is pratically bulletproof. I also heard the s4 has tighter suspension. I'm not sure ive heard many benefits to the s5 other than increased HP, some people thats all that matters tho. Some people prefer the minor styling differences but thats all pretty much your own opinion, most people like what they have i think. The s4 is also easier to find parts for because they are more common, though that isnt much of an issue because both have a large aftermarket.

I've found that the one's who speal ill of the rotary are the ones that have only heard things about them. But the ones that own one or work on them are the ones that speak very highly. It sounds like it's got all the right ingredients. There aren't that many cylinder engines that have the same hp to litre displacement ratio.

Plus the sheer feel of the car is completely different. Whether its an FD or a base n/a...u'll notice a huge difference between driving a rotary and a piston car. Torque band is flatter so the power distribution is beautiful.

as mentioned above the FActory Service Manual (FSM) is our rotary bible and I am here to enlighten you: http://www.rx7city.com/89-91manual.htm

what do you mean aircraft conversion? like putting a 20B into a cessna or something?? you shouldn't have TOO hard of a time finding rotary airplane engines.......I am unfamiliar on this subject so I can't help.

weaknesses of the NA VERT:
heavy
the top makes it an easier target for vandalism
I can't think of any other weaknesses when compared to another FC. The rigidity of the vert is 1% less than the coupe mainly because this car was fabricated as a Convertible instead of a hard top with the top cut off ( like the celicas)

There ARE 92 convertibles because the FD and the vert were BOTH being made in 92. good luck and here is another link:

the majority of people on this forum lack reading comprehension skills so repetition is actually GOOD for some.........those who know how to read only get annoyed by it........sorry.
