Any easy ways to get a reasonable temperature reading?

Stock gauge in my 87 NA has been reading 1/4 at idle and 1/2 on the highway (slightly higher with the AC on). I’ve tried all the basics (new t-stat, flush system, replace hoses, new radiator cap, water wetter, etc). Since this causes me to back off and run without AC, I flushed the system like crazy and replaced the radiator over the weekend. The temps didn’t drop at all. I’m starting to wonder if I’m chasing a problem that doesn’t exist. Is there an easy way to get an accurate temperature reading? (By easy I mean without spending a few hundred on a new gauge(s).) I'd like to know if I actaully have a problem before investing in a radiator upgrade.

That sounds like it's close to what it should read. Mine is about 1/3 when warmed up. And if you want to get a new gauge, the Autometers are $50.
