Another Cup Holder - Door Panel Mount Version
Hi All,
Never really had a cup holder solution I was happy with until I stumbled on this one at amazon: goes for around $6 depending on color and amazon prime shipping. Various colors include: navy blue, grey, white, black, tan.
I installed it this weekend in my 91 RX-7 and the door panel has nice spot for mounting this right above the door panel cubby slot. The cup holder folds up when not in use and still allows you cubby slot access. I used screws, washers and nuts rather than the self tapping screws they give you since I wanted to ensure a secure fit in the fiber door panel, I recommend you do the same.
I took the door panel off and the mounting location I picked is perfect since there are no wires or obstructions on the inner door panel. I chose screws were short enough to not hit the sheet metal of the door when putting the panel back on the door. I used 8-32 nuts and screws, stainless steel because I love stainless in car applications whenever possible. Longer screws were used in the bottom holes because its a little thicker part of the door panel. You should pre dril the holes in the door panel with a drill bit after leveling the cup holder where you want it mounted. The cup holder has 6 tappered mounting holes, 3 top, 3 bottom. I used only 4, 2 at the top, 2 at the bottom (far left and far right)
The holder has adjustable claws that can hold soda cups, water bottles, my sodastream 1 L container, and thermoses. The base also acts as a drip tray. Some reviews on amazon say that the claws wear their adjustable grip out over time, but I feel confident I could secure those claws in the future with an adjustment screw if necessary.
The mounting location is out of the way, doesn't block the door A/C vent, allows me to grab the door handle without issue, access the blinker and headlight switches fine as well. My leg doesnt bump it either, my infini door panel pad now has a second function by keeping my leg away from the corner of the holder . You may bump into it your leg is the size of a tree stump, but then if that is the case, you could mount it higher up on the door. I chose a lower location for easy grabbing.
So far so good, passenger side gets one next.
