Analyzing housings: How bad is not bad enough?

Well after i finally cleaned my housing off i noticed a scractch about an inch long(not deep at all) in the front side housing and, what i can only explain as needle pin sized hole in the back side housing. Exactly how much is too fargone? What can i keep, and what can't i?

Yeah, I believe the FSM has tolerances for scratches, gouges, and such. You can download it here I believe that the Haynes manual also lists specifications for this as well.

basically any wear over .1mm (.0039 in) is considered bad...that sounds like crazy overkill to me...if you can feel the ridge with your fingernail, it is at least .002 in. (2 thousanths of an inch) in depth, anything under that is hard to "feel" by running your nail over it...warpage of any housing is limited to .0016 in., checked using a straightedge

not necessarily, but it's close...only way to tell for sure is to use a dial indicator w/ a magnetic base...if you don't think the wear/ damage is gonna eat your new side seals up (I'm assuming you're using new seals), then go with it...
