Aluminum underbelly pan...whats the point?

While Im doing my N/A-> T2 swap, I am going to also put the aluminum underbelly pan that was on the T2 on my N/A..but Im not really sure of the point of it? Is it for aerodynamic reasons? I assume so becuase it came with the "aero kits' on the T2 and the sport..

Also...quick question. Is there any difference between a S4 N/A CAS and a S4 T2 CAS?

Well the underbelly pan is needed regardless you know that correct?
I guess being aluminium just makes it stiffer it wont flutter at high speeds and will last longer than than the cheap plastic crap our cars came with. On the topic about the CAS i am not sure

No, the alumium pan on the Turbo/sport is a seperate piece, that is behind the plastic underbody that is up front.

I would guess it is part of the aero kit to cover a hole under the car. Adding smooth covers to the undersides of cars is known to lower their coefficient of drag.

It is part of the Aero kit and helps lower underbody drag.

I modifed a coupe one to fit on my 'vert (which uses a different front subframe).

I have never noticed a difference between the CAS, and think they are even the same P/N.

And remember the whole aero kit lowered the drag down .025 Cd which is very substantial (.315 normal to .289). I figure by using the whole aero kit (except for the rear spoiler) on my 'vert it's probably down to about .31 or so with the top up, and around .35Cd with the top down.

Anybody got any pics of the underbelly pan? I'm considering making one, and would like a picture for reference.

thanks Mark. Even if its modded to fit your car, it will give me an idea of where it mounts to and what all it covers.

I have mine off the car at the moment, so I can take pictures of it when I get back. Im currently away from home for the weekend, so expect pictures Monday

Im thinking about leaving the Aero front lip off in favor of a S5 Front bumper and lip. I think that may help provide a touch more downforce. I think my FC feels a little "floaty" at 100MPH +, and am looking for something to help fix that...

Ok, where are people getting these aluminum undertrays? I "really" need one for the infini conversion and none of my s5 RX7s(Turbo, GTUs and GTU) came with an aluminum undertray, just plastic. Is it a s4 thing? Fill me in!

Steve

P.S. If anybody has a decent one for sale in NorCal, lemme know!

S4 FC with aero package only.

86-87 Sport, 88 GTU, 88 T2.

Mazda did too many cost cuts on the S5 to included it.

Umm... my S5 TII has it.

You are talking about the small vented aluminum piece that fits on the subframe and covers the oil pan, correct?

The previous owner of my car was definately not the type to start adding things to the car, so I'm pretty sure it came like that from the factory.

According to your thread at the top of the forum (Here), all the S5 TIIs did in fact receive the aero package. Hence they also received the aluminum undertray.

Or am I mistaken?

The S5 "Aero Package" was considerably different than the S4 aero package. The S4 consisted of little rubber pieces in front on the rear wheels, a small lip underneath the front bumper, a small flat rubberized spoiler, and the aluminum undertray.
The S5 package was basically sideskirts and a front lip. It would not be out of the realm of possibility that yours did come with it factory though..Mazda can be good at mixing and matching stuff sometimes.

Maybe I'll consider myself lucky then.
