It's a 1991, therefore it's just a coupe. There were no N/A trim levels, just Coupe, Turbo, or Convertible. The N/A had two different package options that year and that was it.

if you can toss the hood around effortlessly into the air, its aluminum, if it takes a decent amount of work its steel. Also, theres a magnet test, but i forget how it works. i THINK magnet wont stick to aluminum but will stick to steel, i could have that backwards though.

Did they even have different hoods on the '91? Aside from Turbo and N/A of course.

Bought an '87 S4 for parts with an automatic tranny and power mirrors on ebay for $200 - guess what? It came with an aluminum hood WITHOUT the scoop! Much nicer... Have decided to sell my TII hood and install this one instead. They're out there guys, must never stop looking. ~rich

just tap it with your finger nail and then tap the hood on any other car. It sounds a lot different from steel IMO.

there is so much of a difference in weight, you CANNOT confuse which is steel vs. which is aluminum if you lift them. The aluminum hood will feel like a paperweight in comparison. ~rich

If it's an aluminium hood it'll have rivets instead of welds on the hood latch in the front. You can also lift the alumunium hood up with one finger.

Last weekend I found an aluminum hood at crazy ray's junkyard on an S5 vert.
Cost me about $37. Black too, same as my S5.
Has some light scratches though, it'll need to be repainted.

I think one of the S4's there also has an aluminum hood.. but I'm not sure.
It's in MD, off Rt1 near Columbia.

If it has an aluminum hood, then hood has been previously changed. All the 91 hoods were steel, and chances are that it came off an older GTU or TII (if it has the scoop). However, all hoods from 86-91 are identical in shape, size and fit and can be interchanged.
