Impact always worked for me. Sometimes I just hold it in place with just my hand and hit it with the impact and it would come right out.

1) Remove alternator from engine
2) Put alternator on ground
3) Step on pulley
4) Get impact gun and gun the nut bitch off

Most (but not all) auto parts stores have an impact wrench behind the counter somewhere they can use to spin it off. If they don't have it, see if you can find a local machine shop that'll do it for free. I've had good luck with truck shops for heavy twisting (say, flywheel nut and front pulley bolt). It's really a case of, "If you have the right tools, it's trivial. If not, good luck."

If you really get in a bind, you can always read the online, free FSM. The section called *Alternator*, and see how to remove the nut.

I'm pretty sure you have to have an impact gun to get that thing off. Even on a brand new reman alternator I could not get the nut off without using an impact gun.

Take the biggest pair of vise grips or channel locks or whatever you have. Wrap the wrench in a rag, and have a friend hold onto the pulley with the wrench. Then just take a half-inch drive and a long pipe to it. Torque wins.
