alternate transmissions?

sorry if this is a double post--i did a search and couldn't find anything.

so is anyone using some other tranny than the stock one for STREET USE?

like t-5, t-56 or whatever. i'd like to find something with a little taller overdrive gear if i could- .68 or.64 maybe...

i saw one car in a magazine that had a t-5 with a t2 bellhousing. that would work, i'm just curious on what mods it's gonna take to get the bellhousing bolted on, what clutch/flywheel to use, and how to get the input shaft the right length.

thanks

You should do like I am doing right now and find a 6-spd RX-8 tranny that bolts right up to our N/A engines. I think that it would be fun!!!

Falcoms are you saying they do bolt right up, or your looking for someone that makes them to bolt right up?

i'm sure the 6-speed would bolt up, but i want HIGHER gearing...not lower.

besides, i've got a turbo-it would explode. i was thinking a vette or camaro tranny would hold up a bit better.

I thought I saw someplace that had adaptors for the t56 5spd. IIRC even teh shifter ended up in abuot the right place. I'm sure it can be done, its just a matter of mounting, fitting, and the driveshaft clutch assembly.

I know a guy who custom fits Ford C4 tranny's. But they are for really high horsepower 7's like his that pushes 730hp at the wheels.

probably stronger than an FC N/A tranny, but that's not saying a whole lot.

depends on what they are using...if they are using the ford base 6 speed, then it's good for up to about 400 hp or higher....if it's the mazda base, i say a minimum of 350 considering most japanese companies have made strong manuals longer than american ones have..

Whoa! You mean that with no modifications an RX-8 transmission will bolt right up to my RX-7 N/A engine? What about the clutch, flywheel, and driveshaft? Will the tranny also bolt up to a TII engine?

as far as i understand, all the rotary trannies will bolt up to all the rotary motors....that's how you get guys with fd's with fb trannies shiftin' mad-quick YO.

point being is i don't want it to fall apart. i've only got 300rwhp right now, but it should be closer to 400-450 by the end of this year.

a t56 would be nice... they're only like 1500 or so, and i can talk to the rebuilder and see what my gearing options are..

ideally, i'd like the last 2 gears to be .90 and .68--that way i'd only be turning 26-2700 revs @80 and should hypathetically help my milage a bit.

i can't help you with the gears situation or the fact that you "dont like how T2 trannies shift," but for your statement "point being is i don't want it to fall apart," more power than that has been made on old stock T2 trannies. you may good and well be aware of this, i just thought i'd let you know. it would be nice if other gears were available (they may be, i never looked into it) as a T2 tranny can be found for $100-$200 instead of $1500 or so like you mentioned for the T-56.

oh i know guys throw down 600+ hp with the stock t2 tranny.

i should have clarified that--i don't want the rx8 tranny to fall apart.

i want to swap the t2 tranny cuz it shifts like *** and it's geared too low.

you could put a 3.90 (4.10 stock)gears in the rear end in with the stock tII tranny, the tII trannys are known to take 400+hp reliably. as for the shifting sucking i dont know how to cure that, maybe a short shifter and lightweight flywheel would help along with redline tranny oil.

maybe i could take an n/a tranny apart and use top gear from that... (7.11 is it?)

anyone know if that would fit in a t2 tranny?
