Are all used FMICs $75??

It seems like every junkyard I've visited the last week has ICs and they are all $75 each. I've found 2 Volvo's, 1 Probe, 2 DSMs, etc. and they are all $75 each.

Actually on a more serious note, though, is $75 a decent deal for a Volvo IC? That's the one I've been looking at and seems to be decent size -- and I've heard good things about them.

I think this is the one I've been seeing...

I think most junk yards have a parts/price list. Try to pass it off as a radiator :-P

Volvoa IC = lots of presure drop . You should try to find something slightly more efficent . The Isuzua NPR is alot better design but still has presure drop .

You gotta remember these were designed for diseil's running like 40psi . They dont have to worry about it as much .

I dont like those volvo ones....
The best IC's are thick and long, not skinny and wide.
What I would do if I were you is do what I did, and use two smaller IC's.
Much cheaper, and only required a bit of work.
They are better mounted in parallel- use small ones like the rx7 one, a saab one, or a DSM one.
It's nice to have a welder do this stuff too....
Obtain some light, bendable aluminum sheet from any body shop or whatever, just a few square feet will do- cheap.

Cut the end tanks off the IC's, clamp the cores together, one on top of another, like a sandwich. (lightly! don't damage the fins)
Then snip the aluminum into two rectangle peices, the height of the IC, and about 1.5x the width of the two cores together. Bend it into a half-circle, This is one end tank. Just need to cut the other side, then 4 small half-circle flat peices to be the top and bottoms of the tanks.
ALl you need to do now is get a peice of aluminum tube (2-3", whatever you want to use) cut it into 2, 3" peices, cut a hole in the end tanks, and insert the tubes.
Once everything fits up properly, bring it all to a welder, and it'll take him 30 minutes and a few bucks to weld it all together.

There is a site on some IC core maker (spearco maybe??) with pics on how to make end tanks... just search.
This willl be much better than a volvo IC.

Yeah, I had considered that -- actually the other junkyard I visited had 2 DSM ICs in good shape. I thought about using both, but again, $75 ea, so $!50 for both. Hadn't really heard much about those ICs though, so wasn't sure if they were all that great. Part of me thinks if I'm going to go to all that trouble, I might as well spend an extra couple hundred and just get a nice new Spearco core and fab the endtanks...

Damn... I had a smartass "yes" all prepared too

I've got the same IC as TonyTurboII -- works great. Keeps air temps <120* at ALL times (usually under 100, only hit 120 after pounding on the car @16psi boost for 45 minutes on an 85* day). I got mine for 110 shipped off the forum.

Its off of an Isuzu NPR. Little worktruck like the one pictured below, usually fitted with a box on the rear. Ive never seen one in a junkyard, hope you have more luck than I did.

Also, there are two different intercoolers available on these things. The large and the small. Mine is considered the small one, and I found the large to be cheaper and unnessacarily huge IMHO. But if you wanna make the room to fit it in, and dont mind a black finish/more pressure drop go for it.

Hmm, may have to see if I can find an NPR -- having enough trouble finding what I've found so far anyway...

What about cutting the Volvo in half, sandwiching the halves together to make a thicker one? I'm assuming since it's the same IC, would still have the same pressure drop. Only changing the configuration to fit in a smaller area...
