To all the FC owner
Hey everyone, I am new in here.I am considering to buy a FC, just have one question. Many people say RX7 is a problem car.
You need lots of money to fix the car. Is that true?
I know I do not have that kind of money to fix the car, honesty I am not that rich, but i really like this car. So I want to listen to you guys openion. Thanks for ready this.

I have had two 1st generations (82 and 84...the 82 I put 525,000 miles on) and I now have two 1988's. One GTU with 5 speed and on SE with automatic...
They have been very reliable cars for me...I of course will have some problems, but you will with most any car several years old....The biggest factors are 1) not many people know how to work on them and being new you may not and 2) 2nd generations are getting older and things that have held up are going to fail eventually...I really like the idea of the rotary engine and that gives me a certain sense of unique...

It all depends on how they are driven/taken care of. You find some people how have driven their cars hard and the engines will show it. Then again, you can find ones in EXCELLENt condition. I'm talking almost brand new. Look hard and you'll find one that will last, I did.
it all depends on how the previous owners took care of the car... then it all depends on you on doing proper maintence on it. after that, its up to the car when things start to ware down.

I've had absolutely no problems with mine... Like he said, you keep good care of it, it keeps good care of you.
I bought my 88 GXL with 26,000 miles on it - haven't had a problem with it yet.

RX-7's are pieces of ****. They will break on you and have no mercy for your wallet. But I love mine so much that there is no way I could ever give her up. I've only had her for a month and a half, and I know I'm hooked. The guy who had the car before me was immaculate with it. He took incredibly good care of this car, and even with 142k on the clock, its still a joy to drive. But if you are looking for something dependable, then go buy a civic or a corolla. They will never break on you no matter how hard you beat them, but you will never have half as much fun as an FC owner. If you are looking for a sexy affordable sports car, then get the FC. Every little part will break, burst into flames, or just fall apart, but I'll be damned if you dont have the time of your life while you own her.
They can be troublesome and expensive to fix, especially if you are like me and don't trust used parts and prefer to use OEM when ever possible.
For example, I gave a local shop (excellant for RX's) the go ahead to find out what the clunking in the front end was and this is what they found:
On a car with 50,000 miles, 2 worn out front sway bar end links and 2 worn out rear camber links, using Mazda parts and only $100 labor to diagnose and install the 4 links the cost with taxes in: $618!!! (yes this is Canadain dollars
)
Before anyone says anything, the parts cost was not marked up by the shop and I feel that the $100 for labor was reasonable for all of the work done.
I would add up all I have spent in the last 3 years of ownership, but I think that I would have a heart attack!
But having said all of this, most of the costs can be contolled by doing as much of your own wrenching as possible and finding used or cheap replacement parts. You have to also remember that 1991 was the last year these were sold so the newest is 13 years old, so previous history is very important.
I guess the other thing is deciding on what you can live with, I have seen lots of these cars driving the roads with cracked lenses, missing trim and in generally poor condition, depends on whether you have pride in your ride!

lol wow Dokta such passion. look piapia i have had my rx for about 4 months and i got it and have put 2000 miles on it so it has 122xxx miles on it and damn it to hell i love it. in that 4 months i have had minor problems (blew a coolent hoze, needed a new thermostat) but thats only because it had been sitting for 2 years when i got it. i have lerned so much about this car in that time it is amazing. this forum will be your best friend if you get that car. i love mine and you will to ill bet. just dont rice it out. god damn ricers
ive have mine for about 4 months ,, driving it about 2 after i got her fixed. i sold my last car , which had 24 000 miles on it .. needless to say it was a show car, it was reliable and still basically new. i bought this car cuz i wanted a challege and i liked the look of the car. the engine. and i love to fix things . so i got a car with some problems and fixed them . im not gonna lie , i have had the car for 4 months and ive spent about 4000.00 and that includes the cost of the car . i found it in a guys back yard.. it had been sitting for about 2 years. and it only had 76,000 miles on it . so i said what the hell. ill try it . sure enough after
new clutch, Flywheel, Pressure plate, Omp and sensor, t2 and walpro fuel pump, tps, air filter(later i took out and put in a intake pipe and k&n) evap vent, 4 new tires, Lube oil and filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, fuel pump rewire. engine degreasing. new hi flow cat and exhaust. some painting , and some random trips to the junk yard, and some racing harneses (stock seat belts dont work well on the driver side. 5th and 6th ports stuck closed.
i have a great car that im having alot of fun with .. i love this car soo much. its not nearly as pretty as my last car( probobly cuz it needs a kit and some paint) but it alot more enjoyable to drive. and a load of fun to fix.. for me anyway.
if you like a challege and have some patience and you want a car that makes driving very fun . get one .. if you can get a t2 in good shape. thats what im looking for now .. although im might just do a j-spec. but it saves the trouble of swapping . im pretty sure you wont be dissapointed. i know guys around here that love the cars soo much that they bought the cars new back 13-16 years ago. they wont let them go .. they swapped a engine or 2( but these guys are hardcore drag racers). but they still love them . im looking to buy another.. I just got a hold of a parts car that technically i could drive. doesnt look good but it drives. and i still in the market for a t2 eventually .. they are addicting .. try one out if you find one and make your own assumption .. I stand by mine .. i love it

If you work on them yourself, they're expensive.
If you have someone else work on them, they're really expensive.
And I can promise you'll love it every minute it's running!
Realistically, the biggest factor is how well it's taken care of. Someone who doesn't drive it hard is probably worse on the engine than someone who regularly redlines it - the insides get all carboned up & things stick. No fun. I rebuilt my engine 3 months after buying the car because of it blowing, probably from carbon buildup & such.
I have over $6000 in my car, under 6 months after buying it. And, my weekends are now more of a time to work on my car for extended periods of time than anything else.
But I love it!

expect it.....the car is old....If you buy one and you work hard to bring it to good mechanical shape(new hoses and such) you will be ok......I don't recommend getting a turbo tho.....LESS reliable than then N/A...... Gas mileage might kill you.....lot's of people will talk **** but in the end the car will last as long as it is maintanied right.....it's worse than a High maintenance GF.......have some money saved for a rainy day.
i have had six total rx's 1 83' gsl-se auto (tranny slipped) two normal gs's (bad exhaust) and one 83' gs w/ racing beat intake and holly carb pacesetter exhaust larger fuel pump and rats nest removal only problem w/ that one was i could not keep a rear ned under it. and then my two fc's an 86' base and my newest one my beutiful 88' convertible these cars are built very well from my expieriance and will last in upwards of 250,000 if you dont treat them poorly most of what you hear about them being crap are from people who dont understand the rotary engine and how technalogically advanced this design is all i have to say is endless motion ! so there is my 2 cents on the issue but once you own one you will always want to own one its an addiction and i am personally proud to be an addict !
