airplane sound

90 gxl all stock

i was revving the engine in neutral above say 3500 rpms and heard this hummin/whissling/airplane jet like sound. it does it when im driving too but since i hear it when parked in nutruel it has to be the engine and not bad bearings. might be a vac leak, i dont know. i was thinkin it might be the intake suckin in air. to me i think it sounds normal but yeah i need to find our for srue. thanks

summary

does the car make a certain sound when driving in high rpms? say something like an airplaine?

Do you have a cone filter?

Not sure if this is what you're hearing, but at around 3500 mine makes an extremely loud sucking sound. Could be? Start the car, go around to the front, and pull the throttle. See if the sound you are hearing is coming from the cone.

Does the sound change if you push the clutch in? Could be a bad throw out bearing. The sound will change with engine speed, and if it is warm or not. Give it a whirl.

Also make sure that the fan isn't rubbing on the shroud.

i wish i was driving a turbo. shoot. but yeah i check up on it this morning and i know it has something to do with air/intake. i also got a second opinion and for some odd reason he said it sounded like an airplane too. im sure im not the only one experiencing this, so post what you think it could be and how i could check for sure. I JUST HOPE ITS NOT THE SOUND OF METAL GRINING. no power lose in high rpms either, i hope that helps. thanks

sounds like a vacuum or intake leak to me... any other symptoms? Try spraying some carb cleaner around your throttle/intake area to find a leak... might be a bad gasket. Also, replace clamps and hoses as necessary. Still have all your emissions equipment on your car?

And what makes you think there is actually a problem??? Did it always make "whirly/airplane" sounds?? Engines are giant air pumps of sorts... they make whirly sounds.

yeah it might just be the sound of the rotors. moving at high speeds since it just goes round and round, like a jet engine.
