Air/Fuel Adjustments

Cleaned and reinstalled fuel injectors. The injectors were filthy. Had the car running for about 10 minutes. While it was running plummes of white smoke chugged out of the exhaust like an OZZY concert. I believe the previous owner tinkered with adjustments to compensate for the filthy injectors. Now that the injectors are clean its way out of adjustment. What's the best way to readjust all of the air/fuel mixture points?

If you afm has been messed with then from what I have learned is just play it by ear. Turn it from right to left (lock to lock) and set it at the point where it seems to run the smoothest. Then I'm not sure if your car has an idle mixture but do the same with that. As soon as your car is running perfectly smooth (no matter the rpm) adjust the idle to bring it back down to factory spec (750 i believe). This is all asuming that you have already adjusted your TPS. I hope that helps.

The FSM shows a test light to adjust the TPS. Is there another way to adjust it using a DMM?

This procedure is for turbo models. Mine is NA. However, looking at the FSM I don't see why this procedure won't work. Can it be this simple? At idle just set the TPS to 1 ohm at the appropriate connections. When I measured, the TPS was way off (like 3.5 ohms). I adjusted to 1 ohm and got much better performance. However, the idle oscillates between 1200 and 1500 rpms and still the white smoke cloud but not as bad.

What next?

Do you have a vac gauge on your car right now? i would start looking for vac leaks. replace your vac lines with new stuff and eliminate the ones you don't need. I think there is a way to adjust the bac as well. I don't really know though, I have never had one. The FSM can help in that department.

No, I don't have a vac gage connected. I did spray carb cleaner around the UIM and various other points where vac leaks could be to check for changes in idle, but no change.

I'm reluctant to mess with the bac, as the FSM states that "this is sealed from the factory and should not be tampered with". Also reluctant to mess with the idle mixture because the FSM states "idle mixture adjustment should be performed only when the variable resistor or the engine is replaced".

I got it!!

Do not adjust the TPS by adjusting to 1 ohm. I adjusted using two DMM's in lieu of the test light, following the FSM instructions (just look for a 12V reading instead of illumination). Runs like a champ now.

Thanks for the help.

ohm method doesnt work as good
