sorry to hear about your car rico, that is bummer man.

one observation though.....do you think the ATF trick had anything to do with prematurely killing your engine? i'm new to this board, so i don't know how long the ATF trick has been widely known, but from reading, it seems like a lot of people have done this trick, including yourself. and recently it seems like a lot of people's engines have gone kaput, including yours. it would be interesting to know how long engines have lasted after the ATF trick. yes i know that most people would only try this on an engine that isn't in that great of shape anyways, but it would be interesting just to see how those numbers turn out.

No. I did it back in December, and it was just fine. I am making a last ditch effort to fix this. I really LOVE my rex, and it makes me tear up to think it might be dead. But like I said, all I can do is try to get it back. I have just registered at the Maita forum, so it looks like I am gonna stick with the Mazda family.

Well, that's bad news.
Sounds to me like you already have your mind made up whether your car is kaputz or not!
Miata is a chick car! (Doh!)
Naw, it's sweet to have a convertible, and they handle really tight, as well as having a terrific gearbox- but damn, unless you get a brand new one they need a lot more cajones. Too small for me too. (Did I say chick car? j/k )
Good luck man... I hope we don't have to see you go!

So you have no faith in the rotary engine huh?!?!? I hope you never preached about how reliable the NA's are! Dude if you are looking for gas economy go for a Honda, you have to pay if you want a "sport car" even if its a Miata. Don't you think that because it is not a rotary you won't have problems, specially if you abuse the car. The 1.6L Miata engine have some problems (crank walk), and I guess the 1.8L has its share too.

Look what I'm trying to say is, spend your money on your true love. Have your engine rebuilded, ported, etc..............and enjoy your car for the next 5-10 years. Granted is a OLD car, so the plastics will keep breaking, etc, but hey its a 10 years old car!

Good Luck!

No, I have PLENTY of faith in the rotary, just not my pocket book. Also, if my car was in good esthetic shape, and I didn't have $2k in body work needs, I would just get a new engine. But, like I said, my engine my be just needing some TLC and a ATF bath!!

Sorry man but I don't think the ATF bath will solve your problem, in fact years before this forum, the ATF treatment was ussed to *unlock* locked engines and flooded engines.

As stated before, do a REAL compression test, and take it from there.

Good Luck,

Elio

Well, as I said, I am more than very aware of the effects and reactions to the ATF treatment. I am just making sure, seeing as I have read several accounts of people w/ "blown" engines doing it and having a working engine after. Thanks for the concern!!

I live in central Texas, Jimmy. Anyway, I really love the car, but just dumping ALL of my money just maikng it run has become tiresome (I have spent bout $1500 in mods, and about $2k keeping it on the road!!) I hope I can fix it so I can sell it for more than a few hundred bucks. I am just burnt out.

Yea I know how it feels. With the 240 I went through a transmission which took me a entire summer of working to replace. And before that I had to rebuild the head on the motor. Somethings would give me trouble every now and then. But for the memories it left behind over the three year period it was worth the hours of frustration I and the thousands I spent. Those never really come into mind when I think back to the car. The FC I have now is far from perfect. The engine barely holds an idle, the exhaust is falling apart, the paints rusted, etc. etc. but im hoping I can get it to the point where I had my 240 and just enjoy it.

Go to autozone, buy an oil squirter and a compression tester and some ATF.

Squeeze in a few squirts on each rotor face on the front rotor and then do the same to the rear rotor. Let it sit overnight (you know the drill). If that didn't clear it up, run the compression test. You could have TWO good cars if you find out what the problem is.

I was asking how far the car was away from you, but upon reading this thread agian, I'm assuming the car is sitting in your driveway.

Why haven't you gotten a comp gauge yet?

Better not talk to me anymore..I am cursed. Anyway, I am gonna try the AT, tinker a bit, and see where that gets me. I have to work everyday from 8am to 5pm, so getting a comp test before this weekend is out of the question. We shall see...

Think about it, miata or rx7, did you really expect the forum to be anything fancy!? I mean come on, where can you find a wankel bound forum full of flamers waiting for the ideal newbie to burn to a crisp? Rebuild it if you must, it's fun, trust me! [insert dramatic eye roll here] Anyway, goodluck, I hope my battery isn't dead still!
