During warmer months, yes it will have negitive effects on your performance. Atleast all the years of running different cone filters without a air box has told me so. I have in the process of moving the filter behind the front bumper though.

What's your goal with this car? If you just drive it around town then a properly built airbox isn't worth it and a change from stock definitely isn't worth it.

If you've already upgraded your exhaust and suspension then a proper cold air intake may be the next step for you.

Either way you probably don't want an open intake into your engine bay because the underhood temps get pretty high.

Go for the air-filter. You can always make an air-box around it or re-locate it if you need to in the future. You'll also want to get a smaller breather filter as well for your air-pump. You can get those at almost any auto supply store.

Also, I don't know if this is a fluke or anything, but my friend had a REALLY bad experience with an off-brand k&n-type cone filter. It got wet and fell apart. Parts of the filter actually got sucked into his engine... Thats why I stick to REAL K&N stuff. They are a lot more expensive, but worth it IMO.

Im just gonna use the car as a daily driver i just dont like the fact of the big cluttered mazda air box everywhere in my engine bay, im not worried about overheating the engine bay if worst comes to worst ill make a custom air box, but none of the sensors would respond to this change would they? i also heard rotarys are very bad for modding because they need a profesional tune after any changes is that true or no? should i expect any gains iether?

No sensor would care.

You heard wrong... Rotaries are super easy to mod.... its just when you get into the REALLY big stuff that you need to start worrying about tuning. Same with any engine.

really big stuff as in like street porting or turbo kits? or just aftermarket exhausts also, how hard would it be to just bolt on a turbo kit on a stock N/A rotary

There is a turbo kit for N/A rotaries... but.. I don't know anything about them..

but... "really big stuff" as in bridge porting or J porting.. maybe even HUGE street ports. Aftermarket turbo's, etc.

Street porting is pretty standard and can be used with the stock ECU and no tuning.

Have you read the FAQ? READ THE FAQ.

i read most of it im just really curious lol, so the 2nd gen isnt as touchy as the third gen becuase ive heard that with almost everything you put on you need a new tune, also my car is really hard to start ,it has a little red switch by the security button i think its for starting but i have to keep the gas all the way down for it to start and it usually take about 2 or 3 try's to get it going but once it starts its fine what should i look at? could it be the MAF? or the pressure sensor?

Your fuel injectors are leaking, causing your car to flood, most likely.

im not at home right now but tommorow i will post it , its really wierd though , i think its a fuel pump switch when its in one position i floor the pedal and it will start , then the car will die , if i start the car then quickly flip it back over it will stay running i think its a fuel pump switch i also couldnt find it in the RX7 manual ill post a pic tommorow , could it be caused by low compression , although the car runs really strong

Yeah. thats what it sounds like... Sounds like he installed a fuel-cut switch as a workaround for his leaking injectors.... that sucks. Fix your injectors! hehe.

Check the parts for sale section of this site. Post a "WTB: S4 N/A Fuel injectors".

In fact, I have a set that I know work and don't leak... I'll sell them to you for 10 bucks+shipping. They are from an 86 Base. But will work fine in your 88GXL. I don't have an S4.... so, I have no use for them.

Installation is the shitty part though, You'll have to remove your upper intake manifold (and maybe the lower one as well, its been a while since I've seen an S4).. So you'll need to get yourself a gasket set for putting all of that back together.. You'll need new fuel injector o-rings as well. All of that shouldn't cost much except your blood in labor.

But, when you are done, you'll have a new love/understanding for your car. Hehe.

Check mazdatrix.com, they are super cheap... like, I could imagine you can get all of them for under 15 bucks... including the o-rings... just check the site.

Don't worry about hopping on the deal. I have had them in my garage for 5 years... a couple weeks isn't going to kill me.

Okay, here's a revised list... 15 bucks was a bit ambitious, I apologize. here's a price list from mazdatrix.com.
Qty____Desc____________Part No________Price

1 Engine to LIM: 13-111A-N326 $26.65 (You probably won't need this one)
1 LIM to UIM: 13-112A-N326 $3.57
1 UIM to Plenum: 13-135A-N326 $4.64
4 Injector Grommet Upper: 13-2520-8574 $2.64
4 Injector Grommet Lower: 13-2570-N326 $2.00
4 Injector O-Ring: 13-2530-8574 $2.64

Anyways... just FYI.
