Question Adding Dynamat to Convertible

Hello, all. I reade this old archive thread about an FD putting some sound deadening stuff on his doors and firewall, and getting a much quieter compartment. I also saw someone with an FC post that they added some to the same places, and it did help (he wishes he put it everywhere, but didnt). So I was hoping maybe it would help if I put it on the floors, in the tranny well, the firewall and the doors while I have the car apart; Or will it just be as loud since is has a vinyl top. Thanks,
Nick

In its 2-rotor days, the RXX-7 had a Borla exhaust. From outside the car the sound was magnificent. Inside the car, though, it was physically painful. I had an entire roll of Dynamat put under the carpetting in the passenger compartment, with the scraps going in the cargo area behind the seats (where the spare tire is). This made the car quiet enough that it no longer hurt my ears. I would estimate that it reduced the volume by 25 to 30 decibels.

There is allot of road noise at speed. Most of the "exhaust" noise is magnified in the convertible and is louder than in reality. You'll notice with the windows open or top down you bairly here it, but it "groans on" with the top up and A/C on.

Some dynamat in the trunk and under the spartire cover would help allot.

you should look around. I know Icemark has done a number of things to his car to help stiffen it and reduce noise at the same time. I'm not sure how much of an improvement he came up with, but worth looking into.

Sound deadening for a vert? The vert is already a grossly overweight slow pig and adding more weight to gain a couple dB's in sound reduction is not something I'd do.

May I recommend earplugs or turning up the volume on your headrest speakers?

A few more pounds of some sound deadening wont hurt it IMO. I will also be taking out those ugly E.T. looking seats, and will replace it with the T II seats. I think that, in switching the seats, I will cancel out any affects the dynamat added by losing a few lbs on those bulky stock convertible seats.

actually only the S5 verts were pigs, and even then only 100 lbs heavier than a Turbo at their heaviest. So given that- based on your comment, then I guess you must think the S5 turbos must be pigs as well if they are within a passengers weight of the vert.

The non-P package 88 verts only weighed around 2850- about the same as a 10th AE.

dynamat is pretty heavy, but it wont hurt performance. Especially if your turbo, you wont even notice the difference. Unless you have an insane ammount. But even then, what I tell the people that want to remove the a/c and **** to be quicker, just make more power.

I have an s5 vert thats an AUTOMATIC! Its a Pig I tell you!! A loud pig! I get my *** whoopped by SUVs...

In about a month or so it will be a TII vert though!! I shall have my revenge!!

If Dynamat will kill some bad sound even in a vert I'd say go for it.

Juiceh, I know I posted in your thread. Mine is a S5 vert auto as well, a 90. I will make it lose weight, but it might gain some in the end with all the 'heavy turbo parts'

one way to eliminate exhaust noise is make sure your pipe is not hitting the vert subframe. My down pipe was until we notched out a little bit. Then I slapped a borla xr-1 oval in where a cat should be and no more high pitched japanese scheeck. I would look into that before I go dynamatting my whole car.

I dynamated my entire trunk and it made a nice difference. I did mine though because my sub in the trunk was rattling things. My car has a borla catback and its still extremely quiet. However the only problem ive had with dynamat is that i put it on the underside of the trunk lid and my car sits on the campus parking lot everyday and the tar on that stuff let loose and my dynamat fell off the inside of the trunk lid. The rest of it is fine though.

I think I might have that same problem with the heat, as I live in Las Vegas. Is there a good adhesive that doesnt really start to melt at high temps?
