Acrid exhaust normal?

Here is some background: 90 TII

I just replaced all the gaskets, vac lines, fuel lines. The fuel injectors were sent off for rebuild. The O2 sensor has been replaced. Emissions removed with racing beat exhaust. While the injectors were away, I removed the thermowax and secondary butterflies.

Since I just finished all this last night, I have not had a chance to drive the car too much. But the idle has smoothed out tremendously, sounds great, pulls hard.

Here's my question:
Is it normal for a rotary to have extremely strong smelling exhaust with no cats? If not, what should I look at first (new o2 sensor, injector air bleeds should hooked up properly to the two UIM nipples)? It definitely has a strong tinge of unburnt fuel, but I figure that is normal . It does not smell like coolant or oil being burned. But it is strong enough to make your eyes start burning after about 5 minutes with the garage doors open. I have a MS3 with no cats that is not nearly as bad and I don't have any friends with RX's to compare mine to.

Yeah, I've heard that. It not just a total fuel smell, just a strong pungent exhaust smell. More than any 4cyl I've owned.
