abnormal noise. help

the problem is from 1st - 4th gear, when I'm accelerating from engine speed of 2000 rpm to 2300 rpm, I hear this weird grinding or airy noise. It's hard to explain. Sounds like vibrating, grinding, and air all at once. But the weird thing is it only happens between 2k and 2300 and only if I accelerate between those rpms. The lighter I am on the throttle, the softer the sound.

It doesn't happen in 5th gear, or its too soft to hear. It doesn't happen in neutral and it doesn't happen if I have the clutch pedal in.

its your input shaft bearing. or your counter shaft bearing.

or another bearing inside your trani.

but ....... if it doesnt happen when you have the cluch pettal in. meaning dis-engaged. meaning throw out bearing is pressing against the pressure plate.... then you might just need a new throw out bearing. ez.......

oooooooorr. your pressure plate could be loose,

is it churping? or loose gravel?
or a chattering noise..

i took mine to a shop. not to get worked on. just for some one to listen to it.
i now narrowed my noise down to the 2 bearings i first listed
.. good luck!!!!

thanks for the quick response. I had a suspicion that it was the pressure plate because it starts of jerking from a dead stop or engaging 1st gear. The pressure plate I would definately check. But would you have an explanation for why it does it only between 2000 and 2300 rpm?

no clue...... posibly over that rpm the volocity of it wont make it rattle as much....

if you let off on the gas when crusing.... let off to cost or keep at mph.. does it make the noise too? or only when at that rpm.
when you let off the gass it transfers the weight/torque of the engine back, so i have heard. thats y mine rattles more when i do that....

ya... just drop the trani (use a plastic bag and rubber band on the part were it hookes to drive shaft to avoid loss of oil)
check the torque. and all that fun stuff
while your in there..... try replacing the throw out and pilot bearings... if you havent recently you might... and dont forget about the pilot bearing seal aswell

have fun hehehee

If the noise is related to engine rpm, it is probably not the tranny/clutch. Rev the engine with the tranny in neutral. Do you hear the noise in that rpm range? If so, look for a loose and/or vibrating heat shield under the car or in the engine compartment.

I don't hear the sound when the clutch is disengaged. I was assuming something either in the tranny or after it, ie driveshaft, lsd, etc. I learned that a driveshaft can cause vibrations relative to rpm if it is unbalanced, but this is noise not vibration.

I will check the components one at a time, unless someone has encountered this problem before and can suggest where I can start. Otherwise, the clutch and pressure plate will be first.

Thanks all for the input.

Why? There are parts of the tranny that move at the engine speed as well. It makes it even more likely that its not the engine becuase it doesnt do it unless the clutch is engaged. I'm with RX7girl on this one.
