aarrrgh... 86-91 gauge cluster! :-/

picked up an '86-91' gauge surround (lights, turn signals, etc) from ebay so i could replace my broken turn signal lever

after diddling around with it, finally got it installed... and the left turn signal definitely turns the headlights on

aerrgh

can i gut the electronics from my old turn signal and install them in the new one's shell or will they not fit like everything else? i definitely tried mixing and matching stuff and none of it wanted to fit at all

There is no 86-91 gauge cluster. There is 86-88 and 89-91 clusters. They are not interchangeable without having to change some of the wires around. That means you can't just throw one on and expect it to work.

While this is true... the cluster itself has nothing to do with the turn signal or headlamp operations. They are their own seperate switches located into the surround piece. I dont see any way that switching a gauge cluster would have any effect on them.

i know that there are different versions of the gauge surround, but i was stupid enough to just buy the one on ebay without getting a proper confirmation of what year it was.

unfortuantely, you can't just use the 89-91 turn signal in the 86-88 surround... it doesnt fit. so i gotta figure out a way to tear the signal actuator apart and transfer the electronics into the older model.

sheesh.

Or try selling them to somebody, you can usually get a pretty good price on those. You can buy all of that stuff from Icemark.

Might be simpler just to move the pins in the cruise and turn signal plugs.

The headlight switch and wiper switch plugs are the same though (except convertible models)

Has anybody gotten rid of this pos surround and just used regular toggle switches? I've always wanted to do this, but wasn't sure how.
